I suppose there are several possibilities...
One is that it is musically useful. I can't see any real use for it when playing guitar (unlike those on the right hand), but at the same time, it won't be getting in the way of his playing like long nails on the rest of the fingers would. It would, however, be quite useful for playing an instrument like the harp, where both hands are plucking the strings.
Another is that it might have come about because he never got around to cutting that nail (that might sound a bit strange, but it's possible...believe me ) and then found he quite liked it (I'm sure people can all imagine non-musical uses for long fingernails...folding paper would be one, you can have fun thinking of the rest...).
Or it might be a completely different reason...
