Ugo Group: Members Posts: 5495 Joined: April 2000 Posted: Aug. 07 2008, 18:41 I hate all those words derived from Latin or Greek which are related to illnesses - such as asthma, phlegm, astigmatism, sterile, sclerosis, syndrome, pneumonia, miopia [which I do suffer from, i.e. short-sightedness], staphilococcus, etc. etc. etc. It's the sort of language used only by doctors, which to me sounds really awful, and I hate it both for its sheer 'technicality' and for its meaning, which is obviously not pleasant. However, I hate technical language in general, I hate using it. When I have to talk about something technical and there's a simpler English word to name it, I prefer using the simpler word. If I realize that I need to use technical words to talk about something, I just don't talk about it. Oh, and there's one more word I really hate. Meteorism. One thing I hate about the English language, though, it how it openly steals words from different languages, without even adapting them. Thus, you end up with words like influenza, cliché, façade and naïve, which not only don't quite "fit" in, but introduce those graphic signs that, otherwise, would be absolutely unnecessary. I must admit being an "Urban Cougar" sounds much better than spinster   , What about those "Cougars" who live in the country, are they "Countryside "Cougars" ????   I know when I applied to get married to my now ex husband, my status was "spinster", I think "Urban Cougar" or "Batchelorette" sounds much nicer.  Not that I'm in danger of becoming an old spinster as I've been in relationships, with my now ex husband for 16 years, and then I had a 1year 6month break, following our separation,  I was looking , I think love creeps up on you when you least expect it, as was the case with me , and I've been wonderful boyfriend 1year 4months         , and things are very serious. The only problem is were not close enough , but this is due to geography, in that we live 60 miles apart. moonchildhippy Group: Members Posts: 1807 Joined: Dec. 2004 Posted: Aug. 09 2008, 18:25 Two of my most hated words in combination are "Nanny State" , it seems as if you can't go anywhere without someone being able to watch your every move or in some way track you.  Yes I agree there's a minority of people who spoil it for the vast majority of citizens.  In my opinion crime figures seem to have gone up with all this constant surveilance.
