Hey everyone. Today I was watching the movie
"Never Cry Wolf", which was made in 1983. The movie is about an observer who is studying wolves in Alaska or Greenland, don't excately know. But in the movie this observer is talking with an eskimo who is living there, and the eskimo talks about his experience with a wolf. The wolf is his "spirit protector", which he calls Amarok!!

Now, I don't know if this is already discussed with finding out what the name Amarok means... I have read many theories, from Am a rock to "morning", but it is highly possible Mike took this word from this movie. smile
And since he is a movie freak... wink

I think there is something among the FAQ on this site saying that Mike was watching a documentary about the Inuits (the Eskimos), he heard the word Amarok (which means simply 'wolf' in the Inuit language, without any religious or mystical connotations, and it's actually written Amaroq) and he liked both its sound and its meaning.

P.S. There also is a website, www.amaroknet.com, belonging to a wall & ceiling contractors firm. Its 'About' page says much the same about the wolf thing. On the other hand, what follows is quoted from www.amarok.com, which also has not-so-much to do with Mike Oldfield.

Quote
Amarok.com was first put up back in 1996. The word "Amarok" comes from the fantasic Mike Oldfield album of that name. The word "Amarok" is actually an english phonetic translation of the gaelic word "Amarach" which means "Tomorrow". It is also an Inuit word for "Wolf".

Below is the actual quote from the FAQ on this site:

Quote
Amaroq means wolf in Inuit ("Greenlandish"). In an interview MO once said, that he heard the word in a television program from the north about wolves, and liked both the sound and the meaning of it.

OK, so if it says that stuff in the FAQ, at least we know that Blue Dolphin didn't Cry Wolf himself

Having just had another look at the (renewed!) www.amaroknet.com, I'm still convinced that Mike only used the word for its meaning and not for its implications (wolf = leader of the pack, etc.)...and that those f**ing wall & ceiling contractors robbed him of the idea!!! smile eek

Thankyou for using the word F*** here. Did you know that it is the single most versatile word in the English language?
(Monty Python)

If it is the sound of a man with American accent reading out the various uses, e.g. as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, adverb enhancing adjective, etc. and giving demonstrations (e.g. "as almost every word in a sentence, as in 'F***, we f***ed the f***er'"), then that is it. Also, the title of the MP3 may be "Uses of the word F**k", and the filename could be "Grammatical uses of f***"

Really funny MP3 - someone (please) post a link to an online source
