Not to go all serious on anyone, but I am reminded of Franz Johannsen's book, The Medici Effect, which is about the synergy, creativity, and innovation that happens when disparate things collide--like the architect who wrote a paper on termites in school and needed to construct a multi-story building in Nairobi without using air conditioning--and thought of the way that termites tunnel. Much more to the point, FJ also included a couple pages on Mike Oldfield for his combining of classical and rock into TB. The collision point where stuff comes together is the Intersection.
Viking metal--one of my favorite bands in the universe is Pain of Salvation--a Swedish metal prog band. Also Carptree (Swedish, but not quite so metallic <-; ) . Not Viking metal, but there is the Finnish Korpiklaaani--folk metal! I really like Apocalyptica and what they do with cellos. There was a rapper interviewed on NPR a few years ago using violins with Rap. The combination was awesome. Can't remember who they were, though. Whatever the Afro-Celtic sound system is doing, I love that, too. I love drum circles. I'd love to hear the drumming of a drum circle combined with hmmm....bagpipes? Guitars? Cellos? Something you can dance to lyrically and tribally, including a great guitar riff.
That's a cool thing about WOMAD--you get musicians from all over the planet mixing it up.
In any case, there is a ton of music to explore that we could live to 120 and still never hear for running out of time.
Hmmm....maybe put all the ideas into a big hat, pull three out, and see what they are like fused/merged/intersected.
