My band has split up.Gutted cos it was my baby.Hey ho.So what next?Well i like the idea of hybrid bands. One of the worst ideas i've heard is Thrash German oom pah jazz. What's the worst possible combinations of genres your fertile minds can come up with?As an example i saw a viking metal (yes it does exist.Full on viking costumes as well)band doing a cover of Boney M's Rasputin.Funniest thing i  have ever seen. The whole crowd of hairy metal heads were all singing along!
I need some ideas so all welcome!

Sorry to hear about your band Caveman. So what happened there?..People too busy with other stuff perhaps? I know I was gutted as well when our band first split up a long time ago now.And then while we were split up we got a letter off Food Records saying they liked our "demo" and did we have anything new?..Bloody typical..

Have you ever thought about buying yourself your own computer and making some stuff on there. You`ve certainly got more than the required talent for it imo.Obviously I`m aware that raising the funds for that is a big stumbling block I guess. But when you break it all down it`s not really all that expensive to get yourself started.Sell some gear(I don`t mean drugs) or records or something.Plus you`d be able to come on tubular net whenever you felt like it,and you might spend more time actualy selling phones at work. You`d be manager of that place in no time..    :p  ;)

I gotta admit though nothing beats the joy of playing with other people.Put out an advert "Guitar Player seeks" or something I don`t know? You`ve got a wide variety of musical influences so I`m sure you`d be suited to all kinds of stuff.Have you ever heard of a band called Shooglenifty for instance? They`re kind of a folk/dance/instrumental crossover outfit. But you know they`re all real instruments and stuff,so the dance element is kind of quite subtle & subliminal if you like. They`re as much rock as they are dance I suppose. You see if you were on the internet you could check out these dudes and loads more besides.

As far as weird crossovers go there`s so many around nowadays I don`t really know where to start.I must admit I do quite like some of them myself as well though. There`s a band called Beatallica who are kind of self-explanatory I suppose.i.e. they do Beatles songs change the lyrics and play them like straight Metallica tracks.Or Senor Cocunut who once made an album of Kraftwerk songs in a kind of Latin American Samba/Calypspso style.Which actualy worked suprisingly well oddly enough..

Years ago I once had an idea of sampling a load of fart noises and doing a cover version of Queen`s Bohemian Rhapsody.I was gonna` call it Bohemian Raspberry, put it out at Christmas get to number one and then retire to the Algarve.Sadly it never got past the point of the "trying it out in the bathtub phase" with pursed lips.Plus I could never get through the guitar solo without going into fits of giggles. You should try it yourself it`s practicaly impossible I kid you not ... "Any way the wind blows" ..heh heh.

Lol.All i'll say about the demise of Coopersfear is Bloody Singers!
Funnily enough i have been thinking about getting a laptop as a firend is selling his.Haven't got enough gear (musical)to sell really.None that i can afford to get rid of anyway. Not really sure what i want to do yet.Going to get out and start jamming with as many people as i can and see what happens. If i start my own band again, which having started Coopersfear, seems the most likely solution, then i have something very different in mind.More electric but still using the acoustic for some things.I must admit i have missed the electric guitar even though i loved what we used to do.One of the major problems would be finding players who have the same sort of tastes that i have, which are very very varied and quite obscure in some cases (although largely familiar to people on here).I'd really like to do something instrumental and fairly complex in the arrangement.Kind of like prog but losing some of the over-blown feel of some of it.More Gong (Hillage/Tim Blake era)than Crimson really.
I must admit i am really upset that we did split. It was a great band and it feels like the end of a marriage.I kid you not cos i have been there as well.I'll just see what happens and decide when and if i can players that want to do the same sort of thing.
Love the idea of doing a 'fart' version of Bo Rap.Maybe some Oldfield could be done that way.Fart Above The Clouds or maybe The Wind Chimes.

How about the Wiggles arranged for Barbershop Quartet? Or Barbra Streisand sings The Sex Pistols?

Nightspore i wish you could see me shuddering at the thought. My ex wife has family in Oz and they sent us loads of Wiggles videos for my oldest daughter before they were known about here.I have VHS vids from around 96.I loath them but unfortunatley my daughter loved them!Nobidy in the UK i spoke to about how bad they are could understand until Disney bought the rights and started them off in the UK.WAKE UP GEOFF haunts my every waking moment!!!And Striesand sing Sex Pistols? You have a much sicker brain than i.Love it!

@Dirk.Electric is my main instrument so that's the natural choice mate.Hopefully (funds permitting)i'll be able to go online in the comfort of my living room this side of Xmas.

I know the thread was asking about mixes that wouldn't work well but one weird combination I've always fancied hearing is church organ and electric guitar. Imagine Widors Tocatta with some screaming guitar solos or alternatively the start of side 2 of Hergest Ridge arranged for church organ and electric guitar... You might even persuade me to go inside a church to hear those  ;)

Can't remeber who put me onto it.I think it was Dirk sometime last year.I didn't even realise it existed.I had Nurses Song With Elephants, Stars End,Rime Of The Ancient Mariner and The Odysee, all with Mike on guitar and/or bass and thought that was all of them. What's so good about Instructions For Angels is there is very little of anything (although i am sure someone here will be able to tell me something different)with Oldfield on it from 1977.The church organ is just so powerful and Mike's guitar sounds like improvistaion start to finish apart from some obvious leading phrases.I know from the notes in the booklet that it was recorded live (ie together in one shot not in front of an audience),but i would have given anything to be there. Can't say enough good things about the whole cd to be honest.Go buy the whole thing.Good to see it on Youtube though.

Ha ha - shuddering, but not wiggling?

The funny thing about the Wiggles is that I'm sure they're having a hidden dig at Star Trek. Those clothes they wear are so much like the uniforms in Kirk-era ST.

There's another ridiculous idea for a piece of music: a rap song sampling Uhura saying "hailing frequencies open, Captain!"

Not to go all serious on anyone, but I am reminded of Franz Johannsen's book, The Medici Effect, which is about the synergy, creativity, and innovation that happens when disparate things collide--like the architect who wrote a paper on termites in school and needed to construct a multi-story building in Nairobi without using air conditioning--and thought of the way that termites tunnel. Much more to the point, FJ also included a couple pages on Mike Oldfield for his combining of classical and rock into TB. The collision point where stuff comes together is the Intersection.

Viking metal--one of my favorite bands in the universe is Pain of Salvation--a Swedish metal prog band. Also Carptree (Swedish, but not quite so metallic <-;  ) . Not Viking metal, but there is the Finnish Korpiklaaani--folk metal! I really like Apocalyptica and what they do with cellos. There was a rapper interviewed on NPR a few years ago using violins with Rap. The combination was awesome. Can't remember who they were, though. Whatever the Afro-Celtic sound system is doing, I love that, too. I love drum circles. I'd love to hear the drumming of a drum circle combined with hmmm....bagpipes? Guitars? Cellos? Something you can dance to lyrically and tribally, including  a great guitar riff. :)

That's a cool thing about WOMAD--you get musicians from all over the planet mixing it up.

In any case, there is a ton of music to explore that we could live to 120 and still never hear for running out of time.

Hmmm....maybe put all the ideas into a big hat, pull three out, and see what they are like fused/merged/intersected. :)

@Nightspore.Maybe they are having a dig.I can definately see where you get the idea. And Geoff looks a bit like one of the charecters (i forget the name as i'm not a trekkie-the oriental one anyway).Am i right in saying that in the mid-late 90's they were the highest paid entertainers in Austrailia?
How about a thrash metal version of the Wigglers.
Oh god now you've done it....it all comes flooding back.

Oh....sounds like fun!  I miss the Missouri Mabon grape stomps in the earth-based community. We women would stomp grapes while fiddlers, guitarists, and drummers jammed, urging us on. Kind of a Celtic sound with a stomping beat. :)  I hear that this year they're not doing Mabon. I am so depressed. Even though I can't be there, it's nice to think that the fun, revelry, camaraderie, and great music still are going on. Oh, and the post-stomping foot massages. :D But...will be at a friend's handfasting just past, so that will be fun--not sure what type of music. :)

@ Inkanta if you hav`nt already heard of him you may like this guy Martyn Bennett who was a classicaly trained multi-instrumentalist who managed to fuse Celtic/World/Folk/Dance/Techno music.Quite brilliantly imo,I really wish he was still around.I can remember listening to this track once while driving along a single track road through the Torridon mountains up in the Highlands.God only knows what kind of speeds I was traveling at spurred on by the sounds and wonderous vista surrounding me.Let`s just say that I`m pretty amazed that I`m still here to tell the tale.Your posts made me think of him what with the mention of Afro Celt etc.Plus the fact that one of his record labels was "Foot Stompin Records" .

There are a few more sound samples on his website here which perhaps show a clearer picture to his sheer diversity and talent.Oh and I`ve just noticed a great video on there for the track  Hallaig which is one of my favourites of his.
