Everywhere I`ve looked this last week or so this song has been kind of getting ripped to shreds by everybody that`s heard it.Even my wife came in from work the other day and said "Have you heard the new James Bond song yet?..What a pile of Shite!"..Oh yes you don`t get any of that "How was your day?" nonsense in this household. She get`s straight into the nitty gritty before she`s even took her coat off..Aaah but I digress..

Anyway I seen the video for the song today by Jack White and Alicia Keys and I have to say I think it`s rather good myself. It`s here btw if anybody has`nt heard it yet.But yeah it`s maybe not as good as the Chris Cornell song from the last movie which was a cracking good tune I thought. But this new song has certainly utilised a lot of those great old John Barry trademarks,as well as giving us something quite fresh and interesting I think.I have to add I`m not really a big fan of either of these two artists here. But maybe going off the video itself, I think I would dare to venture that Jack White is a better drummer than his "sister".. :p

Oh yeah and when Daniel Craig comes a` sauntering over that hill at the end of the video there, with machine gun in hand..Well it kind of gives me a little bit of a twinge you know in the trouser department.Don`t tell the wife though...It`s bad enough that I like the song for crying out loud.

Your wife was right. It was embarrasingly bad. What is Shite?

It's a shame that Amy Winehouse couldn't keep it together long enough to make a Title song. I'm sure she and Ronson would have made a much better track than the weak Keys/White offering.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

Ouch. As they say in politics, we lost the Alicia Keys I knew.
Is David Arnold involved in this?

Did they pick this Jack White because of Mr White in the movie? It's like, I don't know, he has no respect for the art of playing an instrument.

Well my wife likes Amy Winehouse also,so I know she was kind of disapointed that she did`nt get to hear what she could have come up with with Ronson.I don`t think that had any bearing on her disliking this new offering though.

@ Jim "Shite" is basicaly local slang for "Shit"..Pronounced Shy-t..It`s kind of more "earhty" though you know..Cuts out all the crap you might say.You never hear it being used with any reverse conotations for instance. So a sentance such as.. "Oh man that James Bond dude, he really is the shite....Well yeah it just would`nt happen heh heh.

Hey guys - i'm supprised at you all.  You are talking about Jack White like people talk about Mr Oldfield.

You need to listen to a lot of other stuff by Mr White - it is very unconventional.  He is quite a player in his own way - definitely connected with his instrument.  Like Mr Les Paul suggested in the TV programme (I havnt seen!;).  It is also different then the run of the mill Shite (Scatter plot this is a word to describe something that is not good - take the "e" off the end)

I think this is actually bloody good and fits well with Mr Craig's style as James Bond.

It is good to hear something different and with some inovation behind it and especially NOT the Whineinghouse person who I find incredibly normal and middle of the road in term of music ability.

You probably have to see the film - but then they probably did see the file in order to come up with the track.  I bet it fits excellently - but we will see.

I think Jack White is very like Mr Oldfield was when he was younger in a way - he is (or at least was when he started) trying to do something different from just copying everyone else - creating his own style - and one that is recognisably different after hearing only a few chords.

Any way no - accounting for taste as we know from some of the things  said (or perhaps not said) about Mr Old Mikefield.

Ray

Great stuff Ray,nice to hear a guitar player`s view on the track in a positive light. And speaking of Jack being "connected to his instrument".I personaly love the section of the track where himself and Alicia kind of trade "licks" if you like.In fact the track as a whole has got so many great things crammed into it start to finish,I`m even starting to like it better than the last one now.

Btw..Was`nt the bad guy in Diamonds Are Forever also called Mr White?...Except I do believe it was spelt  Whyte... Just wondering if it was meant to be the same character that`s all?

I seems it could work better without Alicia Keys. I don't find she connects at all with the song, both visually and acoustically, she is not in her element in my opinion. But the most horrific in the song is his solo guitar sound, really not my cup of tea at all, it's like some plastic toy duck to my ears. And then at then when he plays machine gun with his guitar, just plain ridiculous to me. James Bond artists should have more class and look smarter.

1     Yes Agreed
2     You mean from when Roger Moore was Mr Bond and he wore crimpolene suits and was all very 1970's.   In my opinion Danny Craig is a rough and ready bond more like Ian Fleming meant his character to be - a bit like Sean Connery was to start with.   This song goes better with the new bond character rather than John Barry and an Orchestra.  So we are probably in dissagrement.  But that's ok.  I guess Jack White's type of playing style is not for everyone - but for some it is refreshing if  it isnt' polite and soothing!    (but i like the way you just ruled out Winehouse with you look smart and have class comment ;) .  The actions on the video - well yes - bit naff.

I put some little clips of some Jack White guitar snippets together for you to get angry at (:))  - see if you can spot the bit he stole from tubular bells!!!  here:

Have fun listening - especialy to the words on the last part - replace the words Rita Hayworth - with Mike Oldfield and listen carefully  - it's an interesting song about how well meaning fans can turn into ......well you will have to listen.

That was good Ray! I love Jack White, I only have Elephant & Get Behind Me Satan, but there is something very raw and honest about the sounds he gets. Sometimes that harsh, unforgiving sound is just what I look for...again the incredible versatility of the guitar. He is a master, very individual like Mr Oldfield. Songs like Ball an Biscuit, There's No Home for You Here, Instinct Blues and Red Rain...just fantastic and full of attitude, played by someone who also plays the most gentle, sensitive and sympathetic song like You've Got her in Your Pocket, and then just all out fun in My Doorbell. Brilliant. I have two ipods on the go right now switching between the tracks on the two albums I have! Wish I had four ears!!

Sorry this was supposed to be about the Bond theme..I digressed there...

Alicia who? who on earth is she then?

Not sure if I like the
music or not yet, too early to tell, but I do like Jack White very much.

I think Amy Winehouse has an incredible voice, whatever you think of her in other ways and she has that real belting sound that with the right song could have become iconic. I also feel sorry for her, she seems utterly lost to me and is probably difficult to help for whatever reason. Perhaps just the association of her wrecklessness with the suave and sophisticated idea of Bond was a bit too risky for the powers that be. Shame in a way for both sides there. It could have been really good.

Daniel Craig is a perfect Bond!.! ;)

I finally got around to seeing and hearing this, and I agree with Dirk that it's very nice. I'm not very familiar with Jack White and The White Stripes in general - the only things I know of them are "The Hardest Button to Button" and the football-related "Poh Poh Poh Poh" thing, i.e. "Seven Nation Army"  :D - and I generally don't like their style. However, I love Alicia Keys, I love JB movie themes in general, so this one appeals to me - because of the way the JohnBarry-ish orchestration is integrated with the rest, because Alicia does a great job, and because of the way Jack White plays drums (he does play drums much better than his sister, also IMO). There are just two things that I don't like...

1. The "screamed" chorus. Alicia sings it much better than him, he just screams! :p
2. The silly vocal/guitar duet about three quarters into the track. I think they'd better leave that sort of stuff to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant ("You Shook Me")...
