Is this video a promo for the Ultimate Tubular Bells?

I think it's a shame. I have never seen an interview like this, given by an artist who has sold several millions albums.

Bad sound, a lot of noise (rain and wind), ugly hair and clothes.

Moreover, the fans who have oredered a signed copy have got it much later than those they have bought from Amazon. The price on Amazon is cheaper and the postage is free.
I have paid £18 for shipping from the official site. Shame again!

I confirm....It's a shame!

:/

 This is the best promotional video ever seen !

Rain noise, people on the road, ugly street, moving camera, Mike doing silly funny things... an absolute disaster ! But this is so natural...

I prefer this type of interview than some others that you feel that Mike's unconfortable. He seems so natural and relaxed, never seen something similar before.

About the look,yeah...I do love the spiky hairdo, quite cool and trendy and it does fit him perfectly,it did remind me of L+S promo pics.

To sum it up,LOVED IT A LOT!

Why is sheltering from heavy rain and a clap of thunder always good fun? Maybe everyone should do their promotional videos that way, it can't be much fun going into the BBC studios and interviewed on a couch by some news reader.

The promotional build up to MoTS was all very serious wasn't it, and I don't suppose it has to be like that - maybe time to rewrite the rule book. They were obviously delayed putting this video out though - why not 2 weeks back?

"Delay" and "laid back" has been the theme this promotional time around - (with dispatching, bell-ringing and the promotional video).

Main thing - you can tell Mike has fire in his belly!

(How do you do a breathing out fire smilie Matt?)

Yeah Mike looks genuinely excited about the whole project does`nt he.I`ve got to say hats off to the Universal people on that score in taking a real interest in his work. It`s kind of a bizzarely cool video all in all.And as Mike gets older he`s kind of becoming the Jack Hargreaves of rock music or something. Is that a new devolpment?..I dunno..It`s definetly a good thing though...Accent needs work   :p

I like it. It's different and seeing a side of Mike more natural. Its almost like a fan has bumped into him while sheltering in a bus stop or something and decided to ask him a few questions. He still seems a bit manic 30 years on from Exegesis.

I do hope Mike gets turned on by Hergest Ridge as it's a very underrated and truly wonderful album. Of course Ommadawn is good too.

Mike didn't sound keen on doing a HR remix in the interview but I really hope he does give it a go. The current two available mixes are quite different and - to me - wonderful in slightly diferent ways. Deep down I have a hope that somewhere in there is an even better mix that comnbines the best of both. If Mike starts doing a remix and finds an enthusiasm the same way he just has for the TB remix, maybe he can produce something even better than the two currently available!

I'm not much a Hergest Ridge fan, hope that with this new mix that Mike is going to do,things can change for me (and maybe also to Mike himself about the album).

Regarding Ommadawn,I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THE NEW MIX!!!!
I'm also an Ommadawn fan 4ever.

best interview i've ever seen with Mike. looks great, fit and energised again. He sounds like he can't wait to get into it all again, which is exciting for us real fans.

I can't wait for the next releases

peace and love x

I think Hergest Ridge is a wonderful album (Ommadawn is better, I know), but Hergest Ridge has got a lot of moving moments for me, especially the beginning of part 1. Underrated? Yes. But maybe the album could have been better if Branson didn't push Mike back then. But apart from this I really hope to see some good quality coming our way with these remasters!

It's also funny how Mike tries to look at the interviewer (someone from Universal me thinks?) at the end of the video, but the guy is probably hiding behind his LCD monitor of his camcorder! Still, it looks funny!  :D

Makes me smile how he shouts "be careful" in a fake foreign accent to those people on the motorbike. As if they understand him because of the accent.

Attempt at a transcript below (now edited to fix some comments further down! ):

Mike(M): And here we are in a typical Bahamian thunderstorm so if we go up in lightning don't worry about it, it's just normal
Interviewer(I): So how does it feel to be bringing out an anniversary edition of Tubular Bells Mike?
M: I can't believe its - how many years - [counts on fingers] 36 years!
I: 36 years
M: seems like yesterday
I: and what was it like going back to the album to do the mixes?
M: well first of all I thought it was going to be difficult but it turned out to be a lot more pleasurable than I imagined
[interrupted by passing motorcycle]
M: and once I'd tidied it up and got all the little pieces cut out and colour coded and named I just sat back and looked at it and then I just started to mix it, it was extremely enjoyable and I'd really missed it, I want to do it again. In fact why don't you throw away all those DVDs you pressed ok, throw away the masters and I can do it all again then
I: OK, well
M: So long as I don't have to sign all those 500 copies again, my wrist got really sore
I: yes a delightful thing and obviously there's a big box set edition and the deluxe edition and all these editions
M: Yes I can't believe you found that old box, I remember scribbling on that
[interrupted by thunder]
I: this is live in the Bahamas, May 2009 as the rain and thunder strikes
M: what about a bit about ringing the bells?
I: so June the 6th will have been gone by the time most people see that but we've got national bell day, which people will see on the site and will you be contributing anything? You'll be in America at that point
M: I'll be there and I'll be on the webcam hopefully
I: Excellent
M: We'll fix up a webcam and everybody'll be able to join and I can say hello to people. How about that. Can we do that
I: That would be fantastic, let's do that. And tubular bells, one of the most interesting things about it is it sounds as fresh and as different today as it sounded in 1973, why do you think that is?
M: well I always felt like a channel for music and I was channelling really well then and its so intense that I don't think you can put a timestamp on it plus the music has been copied and passed off like tubular bells so you hear it everyday anyway around us all the time anyway and now you've got the and now you've got the opportunity of hearing it with pristine clarity with the new remix
I: And obviously everybody who is tuning in to this part of the site is already a fan of your work and knows it well, is there anything you can share about the album that you've never told anyone before?
M: well its all 2 tapes but I did discover there's 2 little bits where where there is a second caveman. perhaps I'll put up a sample so you can hear the other caveman, I did it after I'd done the first Caveman so my vocal cords were so shattered so it sounds more like kermit the frog but plus at the end of part 2 the guitar fade-out, there's a second version of that but everything else was one take, one take
I: so maybe the tape and bonus things will end up in this section of your site
M: yes I could easily chop those out and put them on there
I: so Hergest Ridge next and Ommadawn
M: Looking very much forward to doing Ommadawn I've always loved that album but Hergest Ridge I've always had a problem with but if I do it the same way I did Tubular Bells I might find things there I do like and I might be able to remix it in such a way that it has got the power of Ommadawn, we'll see when I start working on it
[looks at heavy rain and talks about it a bit]
I: So here we are, thank you very much for your time Mike and we'll see you back in this section when Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn come out later this year.

@ Matt, two small corrections:

At the very start: Bahamian thunderstorm, i.e. a thunderstorm in the Bahamas. :D

When Mike talks about the Caveman: vocal cords. I've fallen into this trap as well when I first tried to write down Alan Rickman's list of instruments on TB II.

By the way, when he talks about colour coding, he evidently refers to the coloured bars used to represent the various audio sections in the Nuendo software he used to do the mix. Whoever has been reading the book knows what I'm talking about. ;)

"then I just started to think about it it was extremely enjoyable" -> "then I just started to mix it and it was...".  :)

"Thunder stikes" is rather obviously "strikes", and "souns like" is very obviously "sounds". :D

I think this is one of the most natural interviews I've ever seen him give. He seemed totally at ease with both himself and the film crew and I for one am glad he's so relaxed and self-assured. We've all seen the interviews when he was, shall we say, 'slightly troubled', but this one shows him a lot more carefree and open than I think any of us have seen him for a long time.
