Mike(M): And here we are in a typical Bahamian thunderstorm so if we go up in lightning don't worry about it, it's just normal Interviewer(I): So how does it feel to be bringing out an anniversary edition of Tubular Bells Mike? M: I can't believe its - how many years - [counts on fingers] 36 years! I: 36 years M: seems like yesterday I: and what was it like going back to the album to do the mixes? M: well first of all I thought it was going to be difficult but it turned out to be a lot more pleasurable than I imagined [interrupted by passing motorcycle] M: and once I'd tidied it up and got all the little pieces cut out and colour coded and named I just sat back and looked at it and then I just started to mix it, it was extremely enjoyable and I'd really missed it, I want to do it again. In fact why don't you throw away all those DVDs you pressed ok, throw away the masters and I can do it all again then I: OK, well M: So long as I don't have to sign all those 500 copies again, my wrist got really sore I: yes a delightful thing and obviously there's a big box set edition and the deluxe edition and all these editions M: Yes I can't believe you found that old box, I remember scribbling on that [interrupted by thunder] I: this is live in the Bahamas, May 2009 as the rain and thunder strikes M: what about a bit about ringing the bells? I: so June the 6th will have been gone by the time most people see that but we've got national bell day, which people will see on the site and will you be contributing anything? You'll be in America at that point M: I'll be there and I'll be on the webcam hopefully I: Excellent M: We'll fix up a webcam and everybody'll be able to join and I can say hello to people. How about that. Can we do that I: That would be fantastic, let's do that. And tubular bells, one of the most interesting things about it is it sounds as fresh and as different today as it sounded in 1973, why do you think that is? M: well I always felt like a channel for music and I was channelling really well then and its so intense that I don't think you can put a timestamp on it plus the music has been copied and passed off like tubular bells so you hear it everyday anyway around us all the time anyway and now you've got the and now you've got the opportunity of hearing it with pristine clarity with the new remix I: And obviously everybody who is tuning in to this part of the site is already a fan of your work and knows it well, is there anything you can share about the album that you've never told anyone before? M: well its all 2 tapes but I did discover there's 2 little bits where where there is a second caveman. perhaps I'll put up a sample so you can hear the other caveman, I did it after I'd done the first Caveman so my vocal cords were so shattered so it sounds more like kermit the frog but plus at the end of part 2 the guitar fade-out, there's a second version of that but everything else was one take, one take I: so maybe the tape and bonus things will end up in this section of your site M: yes I could easily chop those out and put them on there I: so Hergest Ridge next and Ommadawn M: Looking very much forward to doing Ommadawn I've always loved that album but Hergest Ridge I've always had a problem with but if I do it the same way I did Tubular Bells I might find things there I do like and I might be able to remix it in such a way that it has got the power of Ommadawn, we'll see when I start working on it [looks at heavy rain and talks about it a bit] I: So here we are, thank you very much for your time Mike and we'll see you back in this section when Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn come out later this year.
