Has anybody listened to Nigel Kennydy's album East meets East? In my opinion you can find bits of Oldfield-like sounds and moods scattered over this album. The album is influenced by East European folk music, has many good tunes, and it makes you think of Oldfield's roots in folk music. Also on some tracks (e.g. "Time 4 Time" and "Kukush") Kennedy plays his violin like an electric guitar and especially on "Kukush" it reminds you of the martian song section from Hergest Ridge.

I'm not familiar with his music but I reckon that he has a lot in common with a german group called The Inchtabokatables.
When they started out, they're music was mainly traditional folk mixed with punk. They consisted of five musicians (two violins, cello, bass guitar and drums)...the violins were also played like electric guitars. Their latest albums moved away from folk and showed their penchant for industrial music with rather punchy songs.

This is indeed a rather fine album that Nigel Kennedy recorded with the Polish outfit Kroke. All the compositions are adapted from Polish folk and traditional music but it also has a very Balkan and Arabic feel to it a lot of the time.In classical terms Kennedy stays pretty restrained here rarely venturing far from the melodies themselves.Although there is a couple of forays into electric violin/mock Hendrixian territory which may or may not appeal to some listeners. That said for the most part the great atmosphere and wonder of the melodies always shine through above all else for me.Some nice playing from the Kroke band as well it has to be said.

Kennedy has just released a new double cd with the Kroke band again this time comprised of his own compositions.I`ve only listened to it a couple of times at the moment and while some of it is cerainly comparable with East Meets East it`s a bit more of a mixed bag as far as tastes go.There`s still plenty of gems on it for me though, and spread over the two discs there`s a hell of a lot of music to take in.

A Very Nice Album
