We might have some influence on the Uk top 100 albums chart, if enough of us vote.

click here and follow the link to post your vote.

I am kind of assuming you'll put a mike album at number one.

Let us know your choices after sending them in.

Do they have to be British?

No.  They have to be kind of significant though - albums (or movies or books or TV shows) that influenced popular culture in important ways.  So Tubular Bells would be a candidate.  Anything by, say, the Alan Parsons Project would probably be considered too obscure.

No.

Are you sure Jules? Wouldn't a list of British Hit singles and albums have to be made up of British singles and albums? Otherwise it would have to be called a British list of Hit Singles and albums, wouldn't it? :O

María's comment suggests yet another interpretation - that the voters have to be British!!! Methinks there will be a great muddle at the end of this, trying to sort out what the results mean!

Anyway I interpreted it that I had to vote for British albums only and listed a heap of mainly Mike and Steeleye Span albums - though that's very unsatisfactory because what's the point of  my personal top ten album list with no Dylan or Morissette in it?

I'm feeling that either "Revolver" or the White Album by the Beatles is gonna top that list.

I took it to mean hits in Britain, rather than the hits were by British people.  The site has pictures of American artists on it.

Well I just voted.  I must have changed my mind 20 times before I hit "send".  I voted for my favourite albums regardless of the nationality of who made them as they didn't make the rules clear.  Here's mine:-

1) The Waterboys - Room To Roam
2) The Beatles - Abbey Road
3) The Who - Who's Next
4) Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
5) Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn
6) Love - Forever Changes
7) The Icicle Works - Blind
8) Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
9) REM - Murmur
10) Big Star - Radio City

It'll no doubt change by lunch time!

Due to the confusion about the rules I won't put my vote in for now, but my favourite albums of all time are:

10. Pink Floyd - Meddle
9. Mike Oldfield - Discovery
8. Yes - Fragile
7. Harry Chapin - Verites and Balderdash
6. Mike Oldfield - The Songs of Distant Earth
5. Moby - Play
4. The Who - Who's Next
3. Pink Floyd - Animals
2. Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds
1. Mike Oldfield - Amarok

Looking through the list, none of the albums are anything more than remotely similar. Other albums that are very close to being included are The Beatles - Revolver, Mike Oldfield - Crises and Tubular Bells, Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell, Steeleye Span - Time, Cirque du Soleil - Saltimbanco soundtrack and Nick Cave - Let Love In. And they there are the live albums, which I haven't included here.

I have eclectic tastes, obviously.

Really, most of my favourites are from the Mike Oldfield and Pink Floyd album discography, but I do have a lot of other music, so I sent my vote as this:

1. The Songs Of Distant Earth - Mike Oldfield
2. Ommadawn - Mike Oldfield
3. The Final Cut - Pink Floyd
4. The Pros and Cons Of Hitch Hiking - Roger Waters
5. Into The Labyrinth - Dead Can Dance
6. Flashes From The Archives Of Oblivion - Roy Harper
7. The Man Who - Travis
8. Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors - Fish
9. OK Computer - Radiohead
10. Clutching At Straws - Marillion

Oh damn, I didn't have enough space for Westlife  :D

I have no nerve to go there and vote. I can't even make a decent list, though it would be more or less like this:

1- Revolver, the Beatles (as much as I hate to admit it)
2- Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd
3- A Night At The Opera, Queen
4- OK Computer, Radiohead
5- Tubular Bells, Mike Oldfield
6- Five Leaves Left, Nick Drake
7- Another Green World, Brian Eno
8- The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Genesis
9- Fragile, Yes
10- Unknown Pleasures, Joy Division

I restricted myself to British artists, and tried to be a LITTLE unbiased in my choices. If I were to base myself solely on personal preference, the list would have been far different.

You don't need nerve, you just need to send an email!

I don't understand why you didn't put down your "personal preference" list - I mean, if that list of 10 aren't your "personal preferences", then it's not your Top 10 Albums, is it?  I'm really not sure what you mean here, Sir M.....

Everyone's lists are so varied..... I can never make a sensible selection from my favourite artists, so they tend to drown everyone else out. I made my choice according to the number of times they get played, with no attempt at balance at all. I play a lot of other music, but none of them often. So my list looks quite absurd really (finding my email and copying it out). The order isn't significant:

1. The Songs of Distant Earth (Mike Oldfield)
2. Ommadawn (Mike Oldfield)
3. Tr3s Lunas (Mike Oldfield)
4. Tubular Bells 2 (Mike Oldfield)
5. Tonight's the Night (Steeleye Span)
6. Time (Steeleye Span)
7. Below the Salt (Steeleye Span)
8. Liege and Lief (Fairport Convention)
9. Ashes and Diamonds (June Tabor)
10. Please Please Me (The Beatles)

But not having Dylan in there... just crazy.

Well, in part, it is. It's just the difference between wanting to put certain albums on a list and thinking certain albums should be on a list. I just don't think it would be sensible to pick "Bryter Layter" over "Five Leaves Left", "Selling England By The Pound" over "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", "Abbey Road" over "Revolver" and "Amarok" over "Tubular Bells", even though they are albums I personally prefer for highly subjective reasons.

Actually Sir M, I do for once understand where you're coming from  :D

When I did my own list I was turn between what I felt were "great" albums (historically seminal, changed the world, universally loved), and the ones i played the most often.

Luckily, TB comes out in the top 3 on both counts.

As for the "Greatest British" albums, I think it's to do with what the British public vote for. But if a few n on-Brit Mike fans happen to vote and include Mike albums I guess we should all turn a blind eye for the greater cause.

When Channel 4 TV in the UK ran a similar poll recently, Radiohead ended up with 2 albums in the top 10. So most of these polls end up being won because of people with short memories, or the most active fan base. Keep on voting people!

What is nice to see, is so many of the albums I voted for being on other peoples lists posted here. Great minds think alike? ;)

The problem is that there have been so many of these polls.  I never vote in them because as you say, people have short memories, so the polls are not indicative of anything except the opinions of the people who voted and their preferences at a particular point in time.

I couldn't disagree more.  You should put down the albums that you prefer!

Hell, I want Abbey Road to win out of the Beatles albums - it needs more votes, dammit.

Plus most Nick Drake fans tend to prefer Bryter Layter I think.  His recording engineer did.  And so do I!

And I know you prefer Amarok to Tubular Bells, so why didn't you list it?

I do think that it's useful to stand back and think about historical importance, as OlracUK pointed out, but at the end of the day, it's supposed to be your list of your favourite albums, isn't it?  Otherwise you'd just be second guessing the general public....

It's a question of what Olrac said in the end of his post: the more "subjective" votes tend to make lists very biased, and kind of unbalanced. Two Radiohead albums? Come on, OK Computer is more than enough. :) If it was some kind of survey, some kind of "let's see which albums people like more", I'd easily pick my favourite albums. But since it's a list of "Top 100 Albums", I think the mind prevails over the heart.

But then again, I didn't even submit my vote. What am I doing?
