I sincerely hope that someone from the London Olympics 2012 Organising Committee has asked Mike if he will be the Official Composer for the Opening Ceremony; I can think of no better composer who can bring together the diverse folk themes from the Isles of Scilly to the Shetland Isles and enchant us all.  We need his contribution... I only hope he'll consider saying "Yes"!

If only one composer were involved, I'd actually go with Peter Gabriel because of his work with WOMAD and his track record in working in a collaborative, multicultural environment. Mike has worked with artists from around the world, but how much of that is true collaboration? In other words, did the resulting product change/transform because of the particular partner(s) involved, or would it have sounded pretty much the same no matter who played the piano or the percussion because Mike had a particular sound in mind?

Ideally, I'd like to see Mike and Peter collaborate on it despite their very different working styles. Hmmm...maybe one could do the opening, one the closing ceremony???

At any rate, it wouldn't hurt to find a way to email someone on the committee to suggest Mike. Does anyone know how they make these determinations? Peter's name would probably come up in a heartbeat, but Mike's may not.

I think you might think of artists which are not as usuall...some trancers...

I think that Tiesto did really best with his set on opening ceremony in Athenes ;)

and if they would just get ferry corsten it would be sweet...

but Mike would be wonderfull too...maybe even some strange connection....

like Ferry C playing trance set and mike soloing over it live...or something :)

you cant judge what a musicians composing for the olympics would be like based on their past works, sure Mike has done alot of great work and is very consistent but you knwo what Britain is like with deadlines, he'd probably end up being rushed and creating some cruddy second rate piece and ruin his reputation with the mainstream rather than build one  :/

Pete Gabriel sounds bound to do that kind of stuff... almost too bound, I think. He did the Millennium Dome rubbadubber already, didn't he?

Interesting, useless poll: Millennium Bell vs. Millennium Dome?

Wouldn't it be great if Mike was to be the Official Composer? His music reflects so many aspects of human emotion and with such wonderful melodies it's sure to appeal to a larger audience. Also there's a concentration and focus in is work that's quite appropriate for sport. And the euphoria and joyfulness too.

With the Dome, I went to see the Exhibition, but was so captivated by the music I stayed rooted to the spot so I missed half of the exhibition. Probably didn't miss much. And as for the useless poll, the only possible winner has to be the M. Bell. I love the energy of that album, puts me in a very good mood!! For the start of a new Millennium what better?

And if Mike didn't want to do the 2012 thing, he could, in 'a darker moodier vein' do the music for the televised World Super Bike Championship or the Bike GP, given his love of machines on two wheels!!! It would work!!! :D
