I admire anybody who can do a few party tricks but I consider these people to be more like circus attractions than musicians.

Are you telling me that as well as shoving my bank statements through a shredder to avoid identity theft, I have to do that to my Martin as well, now? It'll never sound the same, will it?

Or could it have anything to do with covering your guitar in marmalade? .

Please, your tarnishing the board by putting 'Kirk Hammett' on it. He can't even do vibrato, let alone shred.... anyway there are some glaring omissions here if you are after fast guitarists. Pat Metheny? John McGlocklin? (spelling?) Al DeMiola? Pfftt. Anyway... Satch gets my vote out of that lot.

Strangely enough, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet have played some of my all time favourite guitar solos: Always with Me, always With You from Satriani, For the Love of God from Vai and Metallica's Fade to Black. I find them all wonderfully tender and emotional, although they certainly don't do that sort of thing often enough for me to rank them near Mike as a guitarist. I'll go with Steve Vai.

Steve Vai. He can play incredibly fast, he can play soulfully and slowly, has excellent guitar tone and, unlike Joe Satriani (who shares the same qualities), he actually writes entire songs and compositions rather than merely solo over a bunch of pre-programmed sampled or sequenced chord progressions. And there's a great omission here:

Ritchie Blackmore. The man who paved the way for Eddie Van Halen (another omission) and was copied slavishly and pathetically by that tone-deaf psycho Yngwie Malmsteen. THE pioneer of the whole thing.

And there are other omissions too:

Robert Fripp
Pat Metheny
Neal Schon
Allan Holdsworth
Gary Moore
Vinnie Moore
Steve Lukather
Adrian Belew
Steve Hackett
Brian May
Frank Gambale
Zachary Breaux
John McLaughlin
Jeff Beck

Oh my! Interesting to see all these choices. Now coming from a lifelong metal maniac my favorite "shredders" are:
Donald (Buck Dharma) Roeser (oh yes he can shred!;)
Glenn Tipton
Dave Murray (shreds with such precision)
And of course Satriani.

I haven't voted as the list doesn't include Robert Fripp. He would be my choice.

His stage persona belies an amazing technical ability. It also belies his penchant for bearing his arse to fellow Crimson members when they are recording their contribution in the studio.

It's a full moon tonight then chaps......

Ah Shredding is old hat.  Sweeping is really where it's at.  Look at :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTiwFLtuIVE
of Jim Brodie, who says he's anti shred (?).  It's his sweeping technique that is truely amazing.  I bet Mike would kill for a technique like this!

I don't mind guitar shredding music when I'm in the mood for it. Unfortunately, the nearest thing I'll listen to resembling a G3 performer at the moment would be Eric Johnson and possibly Robert Fripp (if it's within King Crimson).

Mike's guitar playing is completely different. Rather than dribbling a million notes a second, he plays one note and means it.

What defines shredding? Not a term I am familiar with. Is it anything like what Mike does in the middle of "Ommadawn" in that cascading section, where he does dribble "a million notes a second"?

I suppose so, yes, that cascading effect maintained throughout a 'shred' solo.

Shredding is like a F1 car though, extremely fast and very technical, but completely lacking in 'soul'.

IMO Vai and Satch are like robots, Marcel Coenen *thumbs up*  :)

But both Brian May and Mike play with soul, so I don't see how they can be "shred" :/.  When I first heard "Brighton Rock" off Queen's Live Killers album,so beautifully haunting , and the Ommadawn part 1 climax , again sooo beautifully emotional,I thought WOW!!!  I still think WOW ;)  :D , everytime I hear these, but if I hear a piece by say  Satriani or Vai it just doesn't come close to Mike or Brian :p .  I like the occasional Satriani piece, but I find his style more about technical wizardry than playing with emotion.

Having a penchant for shredding guitarists probably lends itself to playing the electric guitar youself. They are more musicians' musicians whereas Mike and a few others have a greater appeal.

I think that the shaggy Mike of the "Ommadawn" era probably had an easy time of shedding, anyway.
