This is for Korgscrew, Moz, Markus K. and all the other technically knowledgeable people in here. ;) I'd like you to list as many as possible of the old synths, keyboards and various pieces of equipment appearing in the Jean Michel Jarre trailer for the Oxygéne DVD, linked below. [By the way, just have a listen at how many small mistakes (wrongly hit keys & stuff like that) he makes during the fast beginning of Oxy 2... there surely are many ways of playing that fast passage, JMJ chooses a very odd one!! :D] Of the instruments, I only recognize an ARP (the big synth that one of the other guys is playing) and a Hammond organ. I rely on you for the others... ;)

Heh.. me thinks JMJ played bad to prove it was really live and not backing tracks!  :p

Not really, but great to hear such classic music brought back to life.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

On the Jarre in China DVD, which I guess was done after Aero, JMJ plays the very same part, in the very same way, on a Clavia Nord Lead, and it's flawless. So the matter here is either the age-old "new synth vs. old synth" question, or the definite presence of what you, Andy, call a backing track... I call it out-and-out miming. :D

However, I agree with you that JMJ's small glitches are a sort-of guarantee that he's really performing live, this time. ;)

P.S.: Any idea about the instruments?

On second (repeated) listening, I'm starting to hear that maybe the glitches aren't entirely JMJ's fault. The synth he's playing on has got a weird echo setting, which actually repeats each note almost just as loud as the original hit. So the echo repeats of the lower notes are mixed in with the higher ones, and that gives (at least to me) the aural impression that Jarre is hitting two keys each time. But some zooming in on his hands reveals that he hits just one key for each note, his two fingers look very, very careful. ;) What do you think?

New synth vs old synth...well...I think I spot a Minimoog Voyager in there - that's pretty new!

I also spotted a Memorymoog, a couple EMS VCS3s and a couple Synthi AKSs. He has a Minimoog Model D there too. There are of course loads of others, but that's enough for now, I think!

The bloody Theremin is there of course.
It's a historical instrument - I know, but personally I find it a bit annoying. I think there are some custom made instruments there aswell...in some clip Jarre has a wired rod
and changing the tone by holding it in different angles. Michel Geiss can have something to do with that device (it's on top of the Eminent on Jarre's left side on the pic.).
There should be the famous Eminent 310 organ and I think Francis is playing on a Jupiter and Korg PS3200 around the ARP 2500 at the pictures upper right corner.
Perhaps I can spot a Prophet in the middle...I'm not sure there.

Where is the Theremin? Is it visible on that picture?

Also, on the back row, to the far left, is that a Mellotron?

The Theremin's only annoying when it's not played properly. Jarre doesn't play it properly...I find it rather embarrassing to watch, actually. It sounds like air being let out of a balloon, and it's a shame that he's probably the instrument's most famous 'player'. It's like the world's most famous violinist being someone who does nothing but gratingly scrape a bow across its out of tune strings.
Still, it's there on the far right, partly cut off in the picture. It's a Big Briar Series 91 with the style A cabinet.

That is indeed a Mellotron there. I also spy a Korg PS-3200, a Moog Little Phatty, a Moog Liberation, a Moog System 55 modular and an ARP Odyssey.

Yeah I agree on that. Since about 10 years ago The Theremin has followed on stages with Jarre and he can look like a little obsessed child when it comes to this. I also think that a child could play it as good as he does. It's like the same demonstration every time as if he's deadly afraid it would be forgotten. I don't know how on earth anybody could possible make this instrument sound good in my ears...they're bleeding!?
I've heard people playing on saws that sounds better.

Anyway, something more here:

Thanks, Korgscrew & Velodinamic, for the replies; thanks a lot to Velodynamic for the other video... it's nice to hear JMJ himself give names to some of his weird sounds. :)

Heh, well...you may just not like the sound of it, or you may have never heard it played well. I was going to respond in more detail here, but the post got a bit out of hand and off topic, so I've put up a new topic which you can explore if you want...

I think the saw can be a beautiful sound, actually...very haunting. I find the kinds of sounds that can be produced by bowing sheets, rods and bars of metal very interesting indeed. But that's also one for another topic, I think!
