There are very strong thematic similarities between one of the themes in Ommadawn part 1 and Moussorgsky's Pictures from a exhibition, no? if you listen to "The Great Gate of Kiev" you will know what im talking about. just thought this might be something fun to look into :D

I think you're right, Jameson. By the way, the word "Kiev" is quite interesting, when you look into it.

its uncanny isnt it?! i wonder if this was a bit of inspiration for ommadawn or if mikes theme really just came out of pure inspirational thematic development! its so intriguing!! does mike ever mention this composer as an influence for any thing?

Mussorgsky didn't really compose the "Great Gate of Kiev" theme - it is derived from the Promenade theme in Pictures from an Exhibition, which is itself derived from a Russian folk melody. :) The so-called "Majestic Theme" in Ommadawn Part 1, which I assume is the theme you're talking about, and which occurs in full at about 6:13, is just as Irish-folky as Mussorgsky's melody is Russian-folky. :D To me there isn't any other obvious link between the two melodies. I may have cloth ears, but IMHO they don't even sound similar. :)

@ nightspore: why is the word "Kiev" interesting?

I don't know what you are talking about. My similarities are OMD's Enola Gay -> Top Of The Morning, and Dies Irae -> Tubular Bells intro.

The original, that only Enigma didn't cover.

This painting is très Light+Shadesque.

Dies Irae:
G F G E F D E E
+2 =>
B A B G A F G G

Tubular Bells:
e A e B e G A

A B G A is common

Does Lady Gaga use the G A G A sequence a lot?

I wonder if Gary Numan had a knock on his door from Mike's royalty collectors. The track "complex" from "pleasure principle" features a blatant borrow from Tubular Bells side one (Reed & Pipe Organ et al)
One last thought, Chris Martin/Coldplay should stand in front of the sandbags for desecrating Kraftwerk Computer Love with "Talk".

They had Kraftwerk's approval.

Yes they had. As far as I know, Chris Martin sent a lengthy letter to Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider explaining what he wanted to do with their song. Schneider replied simply "Yes". :D

Nah, he did not.

You know, the end of pictures at an exhibition (ravell version) makes me cry. I mean really.

I also like Kraftwerk a lOt. Radioactivität, gives me shivers.

MO TB1 Ambient guitars breaks me to peaces.

And all of these great names in one thread, OMG
(Why is there no crying smile?)
