Yesterday on my way back from work, I was listening to a song played on a local israeli radio station.. the guitar instantly caught my ear, playing mellow chords on the back of a bassy vocal which Im sure I had heard in the past, but couldnt tell where & when exactly.

The song goes on, and I realize that once, in my distant past, I heard a different version of the same song somewhere.

Then a guitar solo breaks in, jazzy/bluesy yet very inovative with folky suggestions here and there... played accurately and smoothly, so gentle to my ears. AND I NEVER LIKED JAZZ.
slightly driven jazzy guitar- completely the oposit of mike's famous signature distortion.

And im like: "damn what a good player, damn what a great sound, damn there are so many original & professional guitar players out there, im going to set my guitar on fire" etc...

All of a sudden the station reporter bursts in, saying
"Mike Oldfield" pause... music carries on.. "on that wonderful guitar,  with Kevin Ayers, on the BBC..."

I was in shock. I felt proud to recognize a tromendous and innovating guitar playing but ashemed not to recognize my favorit guitar player.

Please, if anyone knows where I can get that track i'd be more than happy.

You oldfield fans & especially the guitar players, who try to vibrate, hammer and pull off like mike- there is alot more to learn from him, listen to that track immediately!!!

Yuval :)

That would probably be from the album "Kevin Ayers and The Whole World - BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert". Take a look at this site for more info.

hiawatha - lol
it is a rare station indeed- not a typical israeli one, tons of assorted music, not necesseraly progressive & instrumental. I was lucky to hear that.

I cant tell which song it was- cuz all what was said about it is the info I delivered

Holger thanks- i think thats the one
im gonna check it :)

If the guitar was playing underneath a "bassy vocal" as you say, then it's definitely Kevin Ayers, and Holger is perfectly right. :) No-one of the other male vocalists that Mike has worked with has a voice that could be termed as "bassy". :)

On "Flying Start", Ayers does not sound very bassy. In fact, he sounds just like Kermit the Frog. Love to hear him sing "Rainbow Connection" sometime.

Technically speaking, he is definitely not a bass, though his voice can reach pretty low notes - baritone perhaps, but I'm not sure.
