For anyone interested, a news story appeared in this week's Music Week magazine announcing a new 7-figure plus deal has been signed allowing Stage Three Music a 50% stake in Oldfield's back catalogue. The good news is that this could lead to exciting new projects like more TV sync /  ad opportunities. The online version is not fully accessible yet but this gives you the idea: http://www.musicweek.com/section.asp?navcode=79

Well, I suppose he's (or the new record company?) happier selling that 50% share than giving Tubular Bells away free in a Sunday paper.

Obviously we don't know the details, but if it increases his risiduals (sp?) the money he can earn from repeat plays then it can only help the old boat fund.

And i guess he's so far removed from his old albums now thta he wont be too upset seeing them used for headache pills and the like.

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

From today`s Reuters...

Quote
NEW YORK (Billboard) - A new Citroen commercial that's airing on U.K. television features old footage of John Lennon, and now Beatles fans are wondering whether Yoko Ono made the right decision in allowing the French car company to use her late husband's image.

In the ad -- made for Citroen's new "anti-retro" DS-3 model -- Lennon is shown criticizing people who rehash the past in their own work. "Once a thing's been done it's been done, so while this nostalgia -- I mean for the '60s and '70s, you know, looking backwards for inspiration, copying the past -- how's that rock 'n' roll?" Lennon says. "Do something of your own. Start something new, you know? Live your lives now. Know what I mean?"

In response to the controversy, Lennon and Ono's son Sean Lennon took to his Twitter page and explained the thought process behind his mother's decision. "She did not do it for money," Lennon said. "Has to do (with) hoping to keep dad in public consciousness. No new LPs, so TV ad is exposure to young."

"Having just seen (the) ad I realise why people are mad," Lennon added. "But (our) intention was not financial, (it) was simply wanting to keep him out there in the world."

When one of Lennon's Twitter followers argued that the public is still very much aware of who the Beatles are (Thank you, "Beatles Rock Band"), Lennon countered, "You wouldn't believe how many teenagers ask me who the Beatles were."

I realise now that allowing your music to be used in tv advertising is maybe viewed a whole a lot differently than it was 15-20 years ago.And I dare say Neil Young`s This Note`s For You wouldn`t quite hit the same note with a lot of people if it were released today.Which ever you way you want to dress it even Bob Dylan`s up there selling iPod`s.

So yeah the Lennon story is maybe a little extreme, and I guess we shouldn`t have to worry with Mike concerning the "image rights" That said there was a version of All You Need Is Love that was used in a tv ad over here recentley that sucked so bad it blowed. It both sucked and blowed at the same time in fact is the theme I`m really going for there.I just hope something like that doesn`t happen with some of Mike`s music. On the plus side though maybe somebody will hear something while wondering where to send off all their unwanted gold that`s lying about the place and think to themselves... "Who is that wonderful music by" ?.... You can but hope.

:D Yeah that one`s just crying out to be used is`nt it!?Maybe the theme for the ad could be that she puts on a bit of slap, and gets "carried away" or something.Or maybe I`m getting carried away just thinking about it?

What about Amber Light for Fosters?

Amber Light,I hear you calling
Amber Light,First thing in the morning.

Yeah I`m sure that would go down well with all those right on "drink sensibly" ads, that are appearing at the moment.   :p

Headed up by the former MD of Virgin Music - that bit was interesting.

Wouldn't think Mike would want anything to do with someone with that background - but maybe they are OK since they left  :O
