I arrived in Beijing airport last week to be greeted by Ommadawn playing on the background music system in the terminal.

It was there again on departure in the the departure gate area.

So does Ommadawn sound Chinese, Do the Chinese like Mr Oldfield.

It was quite a nice supprise.

I wonder if they are paying royalties!

Cheers

Ray

Glad to hear they were playing it in the departure lounge, rather than on the plane itself.I don`t think the climax of Ommadawn part one would be very comforting for those of a nervous disposition as you were coming in to land..."Aaaah this is it,we`re all going to die..I said we should`nt have gone with Virgin.."

Cool story though Ray,nice to hear Mike getting some kind of "airplay" in far flung quaters.

I sure wish Mike's music was used more in movies. Whatever he's done that's "poppy" has already been redone enough....Moonlight Shadow, Family Man, etc. I just think so much of his body of work could have or should be used in film(excluding the older ones that I know of). Airports and porn.....not good enough for the best composer of the 20th century. My 2 cents worth.

Well, Brian Eno has done music specifically for installations in airports, so I don't think that's halfway bad at all. :)

But I can say with complete confidence.......Brian Eno's work, while recognized, can't compare with the drama and emotion of Mike Oldfield. It is not even in the same ballpark unless you only use "The Killing Fields" for comparison. Eno made a great glam sideshow in early Roxy Music, and did some modest synth pioneering. Was part of Phil Manzanera's great song "Miss Shapiro"......not the same ballpark. I guess I'm kind of a "bigot" when it comes to Mike Oldfield. I can talk about Genesis or Renaissance, etc....but well, I think MO is the all time showstopper in rock, for me at least....

Yes, of course, Eno and Oldfield's careers and styles have only tangential connections; but I have to say that Eno's contributions and importance ain't exactly "modest", and while he's no superstar in the limelight, he's massively respected and has done works in hundreds of art installations around the world, has collaborated with artists ranging from obscure folks like Laraaji to ultrafamous bands like U2 and Coldplay, and had his services hired by Microsoft (remember the Windows 95 start-up sound?) and by Electronic Arts (his knowledge in generative music found its way into the blockbuster game Spore). So, yeah, it shouldn't be too much of a mean feat to have your music on airports. :) On porn films, though, I agree: kinda weird.

Well, the porn film was found by accident in 1985. Eno has a place in music history, but I'm just not a big fan. He got most of my attention on Phil Manzanera's solo albums. Miss Shapiro is a hell of a great tune.

I get very stressed in airports, so I imagine hearing MO there would be soothing - if only for its familiarity. Was your trip for pleasure or for business, Ray?

And I'd probably have that video of the rollerskating ninjas playing in my head, which would just exacerbate the situation.

Scatterplot, this has reminded me that, considering how often tunes are borrowed for advertising, I've been wondering how long it will be before I see a Nissan commercial accompanied by the guitar solo from "Incantations Part 4".

Rollerskating ninjas heh heh, great stuff...My guess is after the car goes round the corner there, and the African drums kick in.There`s probably a whole tribe of blowpipe wielding maniacs steaming in on spacehoppers.

Is that the airport`s way of telling people that their return trip to Charles De Gaulle may be delayed a little.  :p

I`ve said this before on here and I`ll say it again, but I think Brian Eno would`ve been a great foil for Mike Oldfield to work with.Hard to say if either would`ve been interested I guess given each of their polar past histories to a degree. But imo Eno is probably the world`s greatest collaborator,he always seems to bring out the best in people.Even people I`m not really that interested in myself,I`m always curious to hear the fruits of their joint labours.Maybe it could still happen one day,who knows?

If I heard Ommadawn in a film, TV, public place, let alone an airport I'd be awestruck. Tubular Bells is the only great piece I have heard out there, and I don't really understand that. His poppy tunes are pleasant enough and I have heard them on many occasions, but imo just don't compare to the technical genius of his instrumental works.

In the 70s and 80s instrumental music wasn't embraced quite like it is today, and you only have to listen to some of the great "dance" (no lyrics) music that is around these days to know how far we have progressed, in terms of openmindedness and what appeals. We don't necessarily prefer the poppy tunes with lyrics, to the same extent we did then. Well actually, I never did, and I remember the days when I used to play David Bowie's, "Low" a lot, and the people around me thought it was really weird off the wall music. Some still do.

But times are changing. I think it's time we heard more excerpts out there from Mike Oldfield's greatest works - and more dance remixes.

It's amazing how many people have this phobia - I used to at one time and I believe Inkanta still does. Would it help if they played "Five Miles Out" in the departure lounge?

I've never heard anything by Mike in an air travel context, although I did hear "Forever Young" (discussed a few threads ago) played over and over again as I waiting for takeoff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Eno made much of a splash in "serious" music (although obviously those who believe - erroneously, in my opinion - that some kinds of pop music are inherently "better" than others do take him very seriously). He's never mentioned in the same breath as, say, Maxwell-Davies or Crumb or Volans. Frank Zappa argued that criticism in and of pop music is redundant. . . you either like it or you don't - although it is fun to analyse it according to "classical" criteria sometimes. (And when you do, it's amusing how often you find that some "critically" loathed but popular pop song turns out to be better than some "respected" Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen or Ry Cooder dirge.)

Happy Easter Mr Y !!

No - the first thing I did was try to answer my phone (ha!;) - as that is my ringtone. (No Joke that is what I did) - then I laughed!  and said   "Welcome to China this sounds like a nice place" - to myself.

Then I thought - Ha I bet Mr Y - has set me up.

I wasn't thinking of guitars at that time.  I did later go to a guitar shop and look at some very interesting guitars for £40.   I didn't buy one on this occasion!!

Anyway Mr Y - i'll pop by and play your guitar for you over new year if you are in. I'll be in Chamonix as usual.

I was a bit supprised my self - but very pleaseantly.  What a welcome i thought!!!

Anyway - I then took some pictures of the Great Lie (er sorry the Great Wall)  THe one you can't really see from Space.  And was mostly  rebuilt in the 1970's and is about 40km long.

I set these pictures to music - and it is amazing how Chinese Incantations part 1 sounds.  Several people (cloth ears! but excused as Asian) said they thought I was quite clever at choosing some nice Chinese music to go with the slides!!!!!   B****r off - I said.  That is English Music!!!

:D
Ray  PS (I a managed to NOT mention Tibet for the whole week - but it was close)
