I've been a fan of Mike's work since 1985 and its always baffled me.  Sounds like a piano recorded using that distant recording process. Thanks. Grims Back to top

Anyhows, after all this time It's still puzzling me, the orchestral type hit used on the beginning of TB. Initially I thought it was a piano recorded using that distant sound effect that Mike uses. But it probably is a Farfisa, anyway, with a huge tail of reverb. I've always presumed it was a tubular bell being struck but I may be wrong, thats what it sounds like to me anyway. I don't know why Mike replaced it with that string stabbing sound for the 2003 rerecording, it lost its power completely I think. I always imagined it crucial to the power of that section to have that loud bell sound. Back to top

Mat Cochrane Unregistered Posted: Aug. 17 2004, 10:27 Sounds like a distorted organ to me, but it could be a normal and double speed distorted guitar playing at once (as soon as you start to distort things it's hard to tell what they were originally). Certainly the end has been cut off, so possibly that sound was put together on another tape and replayed on to the main multitrack each time - like the tape loop Pink Floyd did on Money. On OTB the orchestra plays a hit which is very like the ones that came on Fairlight samplers (and later every General MIDI synth) later on. Back to top

You must be referring to the famed "gorgon". This one is rather hard to play. I have plenty of samples of old Farfisa organs and there's something quite similar indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mix of various instruments though. Back to top
