In case you don't already know, I just wanted you all to know... that you've always shared my darkest hours, and I'll miss you when I go.  AHEM... :D Joking (and lyric quoting) aside, since we're talking about Alan Parsons and his Project, I just wanted you all to know that the APP's 'historic' first effort, "Tales of Mystery and Imagination", has just been re-released in a deluxe 2-disc edition, including the original 1976 mix, Parsons' 1987 remix and plenty of bonus material. For a long time, I thought of this album as Parsons' own Hergest Ridge, not because of the music but because of what Parsons did to it during his remix.  :/ Luckily, this one has come out to fill the void.

If anyone wants this, please PM me. ;)

Thank you!  That is fantastic news.  I played the vinyl on this album down to a nub back when it was released.  (I was probably eleven or so at the time.)

The remixed cd was a "mixed" bag for me.  I liked some of the changes, regretted others.  I can't wait to get my hands on this!

Now, if only we could MO to give a simlar release to Hergest Ridge.  My vinyl copies (both of them) are showing their age very badly.

That sounds great!!! I don't think 1987's remix was bad, I think it improved it. But never new you liked the Project as well... 'To One in Paradise' is a great song and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is unbelievable.

My favourite albums from The Alan Parsons Project are:

1- FREUDIANA
2- TALES
3- THE TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD
4- PYRAMID
5- GAUDI

I might as well change my mind.

Molto bravo, amico!!!

I've always like Alan Parsons...Very rare to see in person if ever.  I went to a concert in Boston Mass a couple years ago billed as "A Walk Down Abbey Road"  with Alan Parsons, John Enwhistle, Todd Rundgren, Nancy Wilson (Heart) and others.  The concert was primarily Beatles music but each featured performer did a few songs from their bands.  Heard about 3-4 APP tunes and it was awesome.  Alan actually did the Beatles "Blackbird" solo as well.

I thought I'd stick my two cents in here because I have a huge affection for APP.  But the fact is that the mastering on the first disc in the set (the 1976 original) is awful!

Firstly, a lot of people assume it's been remixed for this edition.  It wasn't.  They, whoever "they" is, did not even remaster the individual tracks.  All they did was run the two-track master assemblage of the whole album and increased the highs.  The hiss is so bad that one would think it was taken from a cassette.  Listen to the rills between the tracks!  And as if that wasn't bad enough, the index access points for most of the tracks are off synch by a few frames each.  It's especially noticeable on "The Tell-Tale Heart", "The Cask Of Amontillado" and "Dr. Tarr And Prof. Fether".  The MFSL edition is the one to have-apart from a volume output slightly lower than standard CD's, the sonics are magnificent.

The second disc (the 1987 remix) has great sonics, just like it did in 1987-even though the remix itself was/is redundant.

I wouldn't be so pissed off if I didn't love the album so much.  I guess I expected more for my $40.00. Grrrrr!

End of rant.

@ Bassman, I don't know whether it's a fault in your copy or not, but on mine all the indexes are absolutely perfect. And I can hear no noticeable hisses anywhere.
Also, the booklet says that Alan Parsons himself remastered the 1976 version. "The original analogue stereo master tape was used for the CD mastering of this version". So it's tape, and it's analogue... what else would you expect from it? :D IMHO, the sound quality of the first CD is really amazing.

Well, then I guess you'd need to hear the MFSL edition to know what I'm talking about.  Believe me, I'd LOVE to be wrong on this, but I'm not.  I do not come by this opinion in a trivial or frivolous fashion.

Incidentally, the booklet only says, "Deluxe edition mastered by Dave Donnelly and Alan Parsons at...".  And the sticker on the front says, "Deluxe Edition remastered in 2007 by Alan Parsons" -no mention of Dave Donnelly.  It does NOT specifically say that AP remastered the original 1976 mix.  I'm a little too experienced with tricky-dicky marketing to be misled by ambiguous verbiage.  I do not believe for one second that AP remastered the 1976 mix.  Possibly only the bonus tracks, I don't know.  But I know what my ears and my high-end equipment tell me.

I am not boasting.  I am not flaming.  I am just heartbroken.

:/
