On the cover of the extended version of 'Pictures in the Dark' it says that Barry Palmer is on vocals, when of course we all know it's Mike himself singing.
Does anyone know the 'story' behind this? Was Palmer first considered for the song, and did Mike change his mind at the very last moment?

You might like to have a look at this discussion here http://tubular.net/cgi-bin....t=2568; - I seem to remember that's not the only one on the subject either.

To condense it down, Barry Palmer definitely does sing on the track, but whether he's the only one is debatable (the shouty voice at the end does sound like Mike).

Nope... 'Lost in my dreams' is Aled Jones, or Anita. :)

I think it's a little bit low for either of them to have sung!

Barry sings all the way through - he contributes harmony vocals underneath Anita's lead line. He then comes to the front, singing the "Lost in my dreams...Sometimes it seems" bits.

Then there's the male voice that sings "pictures in the dark I see" right at the end, which is most likely Mike.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.
It seems there's a lot confusion about who-does-what in this song. It would be nice to have this question asked in an interview with Oldfield himself, to clear things up.

The only thing I'm certain of (as most of you seem to be) is that the line 'Pictures in the dark I see' at the end of the song is sung by Mike himself.

It seems there was a little bit of a misunderstanding here... the "lost in my dreams" I was referring to is the first-ever appearance of that line in the song, i.e. when a rather high-pitched voice says it (NOT singing) right before "This night will never end". I agree that the voice who sings it right after that is male, and I'm also inclined to agree that it's Barry Palmer. :)

Mike sings in the end ("Pictures in the dark i see")
Barry sings before Mike's part ("lost in my dreams") and (i am not that sure) in the part "Follow the light that glows...".but propably Mike sings there too.

I think I gave some incorrect information in the topic I provided the link to - Barry Palmer never claimed he sings all the male parts on the final version, but did refer to the fact that most of his vocals had been replaced (though I was sure I could remember him saying that the part at the end is him and not Mike...I can't find where he said that though, so I'm assuming that I just imagined it).

So I think there's probably no confusion at all...Mike sings the little shouty bit at the end, Barry Palmer does the male backing vocals, Anita does the lead female vocals and says 'Lost in my dreams', and Aled Jones sings the choirboy's parts ('Pictures in the dark, I see all around...' and doubling up on 'this night will never end' and similar). Are we all in agreement? :)

In my opinion

Mike - In the end (PITD i see),and in verses (that fat male voice calling "Morpehus comes to me" along with anita...)
Barry - Backing vocals and "Lost in my dreams"
Anita - Lead female vocals
Aled - Choral part (you know what i mean)

MIke plays all instruments and Simon Philips plays Drums  :)

This is my opinion...

(Off topic) The drums seem too 'standardized' (i.e. always the same fills all through the song - no variation at all) to be 'human'. While meaning no offence at all towards the wonderful Simon Philips, I think it's a drum machine. :)

I'd agree with Ugo - the drums don't sound real, they're fairly well programmed, but I think they're probably a LinnDrum or something like that.

yeah,i listened to it now and it seems that it is programmed drums.i thought about Phillips because it is Mike's favourite drummer.
