Hello!
I made a solo single recently. It's got 3 tracks on it and I also made a nice cover to go with it.
It's in the Oldfield way, as in me playing all the instruments myself...
I don't have the songs as Mp3's, but just on CD. If someone would like to have one, I can send it to you.
Hehe... I don't make music to make money, so it's for free  ;)

Sonilink and Jonnyw already got copies and they have stated their lives haven't been the same afterwards   :O

Just copying the comments I emailed to you, as you said it was OK... :)

Thanks for sending me a copy of your CD. My wife and I had a listen to it and talked about what we thought. I'll start with what we liked best, and work towards the things we didn't like so much.

The guitar chords were generally good. Most of the chords were well thought out, although there were one or two that sounded out of place. Mostly though, this was fine.

There was a guitar solo towards the end of track 3 that I quite liked. Also, the tracks sounded very "warm" - all the instruments went well together and it was nice to hear it played, rather than done on the computer. I do my tracks on the computer, and they lack the warmth that yours have.

The drums were generally OK, but in places they sounded like they were in need of some slight improvements. Same with the guitar in fact. The timing didn't sound quite right and I think you might have improved this with a few more recordings.

All three of the tracks sounded quite similar. There were differences but they needed to be more different to keep my attention in the future.

The vocals need work. They might benefit from some extra rehearsal time or possibly some changes in the melody. The vocals sounded off-key in places, and the vocal melody wasn't strong.

I hope these comments are useful. There were parts I liked, and some bits I didn't like, and I've tried to be clear about the areas that I think need extra attention. Of course this is just my opinion and others might say different things.

Thanks again for sending the CD!

Stef - this is by far the most important cd i have ever not heard. The "Snakes on a Plane" web hype will have nothing compared to this. But what about the Oxford Miners? will they continue now the Bass player has discovered his solo multi-instrumental greatness? Look at Kevin Ayers and the Whole World - where did they go after the bass player went solo?

And does the CD come with a free bottle of Scotch?

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

If so may I have a bottle of Southern Comfort please  :) ,   I'd prefer that as I find whisky rather rough :p . .

Hahaha... well... If you lucky you get the special edition featuring the bonus of some extra liquor, but they seen to be very very rare. So you two have to be very lucky  ;)

Also, the comment about my band, the Oxford Miners.
They still excist, and as yet, the solo activities have been something I did toghether with being in a band, not instead of. Still, yes, the project was/is a way of avoiding the tensions between me and the drummer (personal/musical arguments). And this way of recording allowed me to give the drums the role I like them to have in music. Which is a smaller role. But I really am addicted to the feel of being onstage, so I don't see me leaving the band in the near future, though of course nothing is ever for certain...

Hi!

Long time withou hearing from me! But now I've got the internet (:P) and I can say what I think about this peace of music.

So, about one month ago I've received your CD but I won't possible to send you comments (ofcouse I palyed it immidiately in my CD!;). I've got problems in my home, but when I heard your music there apeared a little smile on my face!

Very entusiastic peace of music! Good work! You know, that's amazing that person/people (in band) is making that type of music (anyway for Polish reality). Calm, entusjastic, acoustic music! For me that was something different!

Nice melodies, maybe I will put there some effects (but you know - Synthetic Substance - my cousin said "Your music is one big reeverb" :P), but I think that will take the atmosphere on the songs out. Maybe just pads on reeverb for more "liquid" sound.

Vocal!
You've got pretty nice voice, but I think you should sing a bit highier, 'couse you don't hit the notes when lower notes. Anyway the vocal is something that you should work with ;) (just like me :P)

Today I was with my parents and my girlfriend at the seaside, and we listened you music in car. My parents really enjoyed it, my father said that is connected with a folk or national music (I agree with that), but both of my parents said that you should work with your vocal, but just with hitting notes.

The quality of tracks is very well. I haven't heard any noises or something. Pretty nice mastering, sound realisation.

Oh, one more thing - the solo on guitar in the third song - that don't suit me. The sound of the guitar should be less distorted, with the all sounding of the song it should be more light and subtele.

Anyway I really enjoyed it! For the album/single I would give you 5 (from max 6 marks) :)
Thanks a lot for introducing me into your music, and I hope that you will enjoy my comment, and that will be helpful for you.

Take care
Tom

Thanks for the review mate!

Yes, you're right about singing...
I never did that before much (occasionally in my band, but not a lot), so I was not very used to sing. I practise with that a lot.
Funny, that story about reverb. Yes, it's not so much used on those tracks. On the tracks I recorded after that I did that much more. Now everytime my producer and I are mixing I keep shouting 'MOOOOORE ECHOE!!!!!!!!!!!!' ... hahaha...

I also made a track with a very long echo/reverb on the snare drum. So now it sounds totally 80's, with the snare ringing for about 1 second. haha...

I'm flattered that you even played it in the car.

Good comment about low notes. I'll record a vocal track soon, and I'll try to sing it in more high notes!!
And then after that I'll let you hear it !!!

Thanks :)
stefan
