Hello

I read this forum everyday, but I am a little bit upset at the moment. Indeed, I am here because I am a fan of Mike's music, not because of other reasons.

Today, I have read the "new posts" and here are what I can see:

Has there ever been?
Guitar god monthly
Unusual covers
Brighter days
What are you playing this very second?
Practical jokes
Twitter
Pearls of Wisdom

I would like to read something about Mike's music, please!

;)

It surprises me that the moderators don't step in more often to get a few discussions going; after all, it's their site... Oh well, if Yanouch is upset he has my sympathies... I'll start a topic in QE2, but if no one replies, don't blame me! ;)

:/  ... this place has been a ghost town these last few days - can see tumbleweed blowing down the street.

Just think, this time last year it was buzzing with MOTS about to come out next week - was it?

I might respond to you nightspore - I'm right behind you   :)

As long you have "meet and greet" and "general discussion" sections of the forum you will have the social chat thing. I'm sure it's nice for those involved and I'm not bothered the least.
Strangely, when I've tried to start discussion about Mike's back catalogue I've had reactions like "who cares" and "meh" from other (very active) forum posters.

When Mike Oldfield dry out, so does the community..

There is only so many limited ways to describe MO as a semi-god and master of music before it gets boring..

And yanouch65....NOBODY prevents you from making new topics or dig a old one up and comment on it..

Stop whining and start writing   :)

Yanouch, I agree that there seems to be more non-MO talk going on recently, and that's one* of the reasons why I've been less active. However, I also agree with 3Wheeler and prisoner.of.the.dark.sky that a community is what you make it. Maybe add some thoughts or questions of your own and see if that stirs discussion? In any case, I'm always pleased to see your contributions, Yanouch. :)

* Other reasons: a) I don't think people really want to hear me go on and on about how much I love Tr3s Lunas, and b) my personal life has been very busy these days.

I'm curious about why "Guitar God Monthly" is on the list, though. Sure, it's a bit silly, but it's all about Mike, after all.

I agree. We swapped pix of Mike, that is related to Mike. I saw when the MOTS phenomenon died down so did MO talk. Even if MO never releases another album we will continue to discuss him one way or the other.........here or elsewhere. Myself, I'm at a disadvantage because I have no one to celebrate his musical achievements with(look at where I live-texas). I think this site has been very fun for me, it's well run, fun, interesting, hilarious at times. But I came here for MO, mainly to find an original copy of HR to digitalize(boy did I hit paydirt on that one!;) But we can talk about fun times such as toiletpapering cars in 1973 too. I was probably whistling TB1 at the time. Let's get back to Mike. How many motorcycles does he have now? Does he still have the "shaped fingernails" for fingerpicking? I'm 47 and my fingernails are still as hard as they were 25 years ago. Does anybody know what Mike's prefferred string guage is on a 6 string steel acoustic? I prefer light guage myself. I wonder if Mike watched the Oscars? I bet he was rooting for Kate Winslet.....oh she looked nice that night! I wonder if Mike was bummed out that Peter Gabriel pulled out of his participation in the Oscars. I think maybe Mike and Hayley Westenra could do something nice on CD thats mildly orchestral but more Ommadawnish, ya think? That would be awesome. I'm really liking some of the tribute MO stuff I'm hearing, I wonder if he likes it too? That Yamaha mixer on Ebay was mislabeled as being used on TB(1?), as it was first marketed in 1987, but it was his. Compare the photos from ebay and the photos here. Identical in every way, the writing on the masking tape for example. He had/has true technical and expressive abilities unmatched by many in the last 35 years. What's your thinking on this?

MO is the main reason we're here, nowadays,at least for me I've been discovering more about out fellow members here throughout other topics...there's life beyond Mike Oldfield's musical world!

I haven't heard of any forum anywhere based on one artist/band like this one that survives based 100% on the artist's/band's musical stuff.

It's hard to be a Mike Oldfield fan...especially for those who admire just the music, like you and some others out there here. Even for me,who like not just the music(but the person also),it's hard to deal with the reality...at least I'm into other types of music that keeps me interested, but not with effect Mike has on me.

Try revisiting old stuff on the forum, there were great topics regarding MO's music in the past  ;)

I have to accept the blame for this yanouch, i thought it would be nice to get to know other mo fans and use threads to link in with mikes career, so i will bow out now and apologise to you all,  deb

I suppose that's true, but for me there's always the feeling that socializing online is not quite the real thing, that something is missing. A part of me thinks, "ultimately, it's all just words on a screen"; there's the sadness of knowing that none of us is ever going to meet.

People should remember that any discussion topic is finite, so there's only so much you can talk about it. Eventually, it seems like all the important points have been covered, and if you want to keep talking about it, you'll just repeat old topics all over again. And there's repetition because every topic is limited, so it's impossible to keep a discussion going forever. So, either people say what's been said before, or just stop talking -- because every discussion is finite. There's only so many things you can talk about before you start repeating yourself. And repetition happens because--

Point is, maybe many members become "indifferent" to Mike related topics because they ALREADY wrote and read all about it, not because they want to sabotage the board or because they don't care about it. But all the old topics are there, still open. Sweetpea used to bump old topics to share her views, and as a result, old discussions became revitalised by new people with new ideas. I think that tends to be a far better strategy than expecting old members to start new (and potentially absurd or inane) topics for discussion.

Off-topic discussions always exist, and we should be thankful that there's a space for them, so they don't end up contaminating in-topic threads.

I'd like to say ex member 419 started some fun topics and I would like her to continue to do so. So join together and get her back dammit. Yanuch, I'll be honest, about a month ago I was so bored I -almost- left your post verbatim. I was reading about bands I'd never heard of and canned goods(although some of that was funny). The same post, I shit-you-not. Whatever happened to Mike Oldfield? But I can see it was better for me to leave that task up to you. Although you -DO- have a point.....MY FRIEND. We all continue to revel in Incantations, but I think Deb needs to be here. She's jumped ship. Please throw her a line and reel her back in. Come home Deb! I was bored until she started some fun topics and I want her back. Until then dude, lets talk about that Gibson SG you bought. What did you re-string it with? D'Addario's I hope. My choice......

Well, that depends on two things: the intelligence of the critic and the richness of what's being discussed. There's also "the hermeneutic circle", for those who know literary theory. People NEVER run out of things to say about Shakespeare, for example.
