Hi Mr Flanders , welcome to TubularBoard :).
On the original 1973 Tubular Bells, "Master of Ceremonies "is  Viv Stanshall, of The Bonzo Dog Do-dah Band.Born in Walthamstow , East London, he was evacuated with his Mother to Shillington in Oxfordshire. His Father was demobbed after WW2, as an army officer, and at home Viv was expected to talk "posh",but with his friends he reverted to his localTeddy Boy dialect.     more can be found about him here.    www.iankitching.me.uk/music/bonzos/viv.html,
scroll down the page for info on his contribution to Tubular Bells, including info on the "vocal" version of "The Sailors Hornpipe, available on the "Boxed" LP/CD set.

Come to find out, there is a guy somewhat locally who had been a friend of Viv's. One of these days, I will get around to interviewing him.

Yeh I always thought John Cleese was a bad choice as well. He is a comedian, is TB a comedic piece? It never sat right with me. Love Viv tho and esp the Boxed version, and I love Alan Rickman too. Yeh I know the Boxed version was comedic as well but it was not the official release, it was meant to be comedic.

I agree I find John Cleese as Master of Ceremonies rather annoying,  for me something about his delivery just doesn't work
:/.  Is TB comedy??  I don't think that's how Mike originally intended TB to be,I think the comic elements were thought up later on,after copious amounts of whisky, from The Manor cellar,or a local pub, depending on which version you believe.
I love Viv as M of C, and I also love the "Boxed" Sailors Hornpipe. Oh the fun,the frivolity,I can picture Mike's ,Viv's and Tom Newman's 3am tramp around the Manor house   .

I play my CD of TB more, despite my love of the Boxed Sailors Hornpipe,  I only have Boxed on LP and no turntable and phono stage ATM. To be honest I love both versions,I don't think the spoken Sailors Hornpipe would've had a detrimental effect upon sales.   :D

Yeah, the boxed version really is a laugh... he sounds more pissed as the song goes on... I love the way he says
'Oxfordshire, 1973, goodnight' ...  :D

Cleese is annoying a bit, though he 's cool as a person. I find him in the Piltdownboy section more sounding like a poodle than a caveman. hahaha...

Vivian Stanshall is the best MC imho. Just a very lovely voice.

I forgot to say hello Nerd_Flanders...how rude of me so ..Hello!

:D

Having thought about it(and had a listen),I think I can see where Mike Oldfield was coming from .....I guess that this section of music is more uplifting and "fun" (compared to other sections of TB) ,and so maybe wanted the MC's voice to reflect this,
........hence the use of John Cleese......so maybe not quite so strange a choice after all, however, I still dont think it comes over too well.....maybe a lesser known/recognisable voice would have worked better ?........anyhow Viv Stanshall is/was the best version......

and it could have been worse......it cudve been MC Hammer
:D

I could send you to a Star Trek FAQ, but that would not give you the connection.

Klingon = humanoid alien race created in the first "Star Trek" TV series. Substantially revised in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and subsequent series. A Klingon language was introduced in the first "Star Trek" film. It is extremely harsh and gutteral. The instances where Klingons speak their "native language" in "Star Trek" sound rather like the caveman duet singers in "Caveman".  Mike Oldfield, if he is a Star Trek fan, was surely aware of this as he remade "Piltdown Man" into the "Caveman" track in TB2003.

Personally I found that nerd's question was equally racist, ignorant and offensive. I'm suprised to find that anybody answered such a crass and repellent post.

Thanks for the explanation Hiawatha!
It doesn't surprise me now that I didn't understand, since in my whole life I must have watched 4 seconds of star trek

Yes, I think so too. It may have just been said like that in jest, but some people can find comments particularly offensive. People on this board appreciate the basic courtesies, as a heads up to you Nerd_flanders.

I agree that people may  find that comment offensive, even though it may well have been put in that manner for jest.

The idea that one should speak using BBC English is an outdated concept, the  regional accents spoken on UK tv programmes today is so varied .

After all the time it tookto checkout the links and get them to work,in answer the original question  asimple thanks would have been nice         :O .  Rant over

Still on the positive side this topic has become alively topic about the Master Of Ceremonies role, and John Cleese playing a Klingon for the Caveman section of TB 2003
  .

I agree love Viv as M of C.

I've just had a thought enter my head if Mike decided that he wanted to tour with Tubular Bells how about teaming up with Brian May, and Patrick Moore as M of C    :D .
