I've always wondered which was the reason that made so many MO adepts in Spain.
Was it because Mike's visits? Because his concerts? Because the references in his music? I mean, his work didn't follow the common way to arrive at the public (TV, radio, films...) and I don't remember anybody in popular media who declared his/her adeption to bring up us his fame. It wasn't either a kind of music in which we had previous experience. In other words, each fan discovered Mike Oldfield's music by his/her own. So it was not an accidental but a conscient option, which makes it still more significative.
However, I've never found a convincent reason.

Siempre me he preguntado por qué MO ha contado con tantos adeptos en España.
¿Acaso fue debido a las visitas? ¿A los conciertos?, ¿A las referencias en su música? Quiero decir, su trabajo no siguió los cauces usuales para llegar al público (TV, radio, películas,...) y no recuerdo a ningún personaje famoso que se declarase adepto y lo popularizara. Tampoco se trata de un tipo de música en la que estuviéramos instruídos. En otras palabras, cada fan de MO descubrió su música "porque se lo curró" :cool:. No fue un hecho casual, sino una opción consciente, cosa que lo hace aún más significativo.
Sea como fuere, nunca he podido encontrar una razón convincente.

Well, this has been my first participation at this forum. However, I should say that as soon as I had my first Internet connection (about 8 years ago) I ran to look for MO web pages in one of those nearly retired browsers. I remember this was my first visit.

I don't think that Mike's affection for Spain is really 'ancestral' - IIRC it began in the late '90s, when TBIII hit big and stuff like that - but of course I may be utterly wrong. :)
The reason - well, isn't instrumental guitar-based music big, as a genre, in Spain? Aren't there lots of guitarists who are so good that they get to play with nearly EVERYONE in the music business, and whose style is instantly recognizable? Isn't guitar-based group Gispy Kings one of Spain's biggest and most constant hitmakers? ;) So I think it's very, very fitting that such high honors were given to a guitarist. Sure, Mike is more than just a guitarist, but he is a guitarist and I don't think that anyone can deny that. :) :D

P.S.: What is the literal meaning of porque se lo curró ? You didn't translate that in English. :)

It's a sort of idiom in slang. "Currar" means "Trabajar" that is "to work". So "currarse" + something means to work hard to get it.
E. g. if we needed to explain the difference between MO and Enrique Iglesias, we could argue that "Mike Oldfield is a self made man" which could be translated as "Mike Oldfield se lo ha currado" :p  (of course, if someone needed such a trivial remark I would keep a particular opinion about him/her ;)).

Oh dear, I feel really ridiculous explainig. I hope it was quite clear. Anyway, there must be planty of people in here to accurate it better than me.

P.S.: Gispy Kings one of Spain's biggest and most constant hitmakers???!!! That one was great! :laugh:
