You ever had one of those ideas that sounded pretty cool when you thought about them, but when you tried to execute them, they seemed downright impossible? Yeah, so one day, I thought it would be pretty cool to write a piece for solo piano - in sonata form!! - and I already had some nifty themes floating in my head, most of them involving chromatic thirds and whatnot. To my surprise, I finished it very quickly, and it sounds... pretty decent. At least to me.

It's a heavily facetious piece, though. The sonata form is... slightly wretched, and there's little so-called tonality to be found. At times, the song is deliberately derailed just when it seems to gravitate towards something of a theme. The thing I had in mind here, basically, is a goofed-up, yet grim parody of "silent movie" soundtracks for scary films. Anyone who ever saw the cartoon "Little Robots" and knows the character Scary will understand what I mean. :)

The piano is synthesized, as it should be obvious as soon as you hear the first notes. You might notice that some notes sound a little "delayed", as if they miss their cue. It's a problem with the piano samples, which I only fixed after I recorded that take. It's a low quality mono recording, but the good recording will come up when the whole album is ready.

Again: it's a FACETIOUS piece. ;)

(the song is now available on the album Big Robot, Little Robot. Check out the thread here.)

It's very well played and very apt for the sort of sound (or soundscape) that it's meant to convey. But musically it's horrible.  :D Sorry, Fernie, I just don't like atonal music. :)

What I meant was - it reminded me of the music played along to silent black and white movies form the 1920's. Fun music that also told the story 'cos they hadn't invented soundtracks then!

Sure! You did say something. To paraphrase someone from another website, "Does that button say 'add reply' or 'kiss the artist's ars*'?" :)

Thanks for explaining. Next time, I'd better search Wikipedia instead of play the fool. ;)

I also don't like atonal music generally, but I like this one. :) And I adore you that atonal melodies float in your head. :)

I liked it, I too thought about silent movies.
you could add some life to it using a real piano, but I guess there's not many people around that can actually play it.

I don't like this kind of music either, though it produces me some curiosity when I hear it. Interesting piece, and great execution.

I sure know I can't play it - at least without months of exhaustive training. But I'd have lots of fun hearing that one being played live. Maybe one day, who knows? :)

Thanks all around, once again!

I'm all in for a bit of atonallity, or a bit of movie-humor...but all in all only if they are there to break free for a moment out of the dominant atmospheric/harmony....

funny thing though, is that it's obvious...I dislike it when people who don't know how to write music, or don't play an instrument, write music on fruityloops or any sequencer, and playing horribly offkey parts. especially when the song isn't 'about' offkey playing. they come with catchy stuff, and then ruin a lot if it...

but this tune sounds more like a musician playing atonally on intention ;) which is cool
