Project: Air Guitar

You may have heard of a Finnish project designed to recreate instruments that can be literaly played in the air. The player wears special orange gloves which are picked up by a camera. The movements are translated into data for the computer to process as sound. In its current stage, it seems more like a hi-tech toy than a proper instrument that could be performed with, but the technology does seem promising.

This seems to have gained more publicity recently and the BBC did a report on it. - (Streaming Video). As well as guitar, they have now developed the technology for percussion instruments. Particularly worthy of note is that the guy is playing Mike's Finale theme on the 'xylophone' instrument. :)

This is what I dreamt about! :D

They say they hope to transfer it to games consoles within the next year, COOL!!

I want it  :)

Thinking about it's practical uses though, you could improve your guitar skills, and then transfer you new found dexterity to the real thing

If you like the idea and you have a webcam and a computer running Windows, you can try this virtual theremin. I've not tried it, but I'd imagine it might take you a bit of practise with it before you can play anything listenable on it...if playing something listenable is possible at all!

The theremin was of course the original hands-free instrument and I can't say I've yet come across another which comes close to its expressive abilities...neither have I come across another which is as challenging to play. You can't have it all, it seems...

It seems to me that this is indeed some kind of a toy.
atleast it seems impropable that it would be any easier to play this instrument than to play a real guitar, which is propably the easiest instrument available.
It could be fun though.
Anyway I havent heard anything about this before, although I live in this small country.
If it turns out to be something revolutionary, perhaps Mike will use one in some of his future tunes.

This kind of fits under this same topic:

There's also a funny guitar "game" here:

http://guitarshredshow.com/

You can trigger various licks and riffs on your computer keyboard. There's a practising mode and then a "jam session" with a backing track.

It won some multimedia award lately.
