Hello everyone!

I've been thinking that a lot of fellow Oldfield fans are registered users at last.fm Some of the inspired musicians over here even already have a page at last.fm Langdana, Ben Barden, Viper, Ian Hubball, Synthetic Substance... just to mention some of them.

Well, I'm currently the manager of a registered label at last.fm, Pandora Music (see also Pandora Music's own webpage, Flash required), so I could easily publish on last.fm a compillation album of music made by inspired Oldfield fans. If any of them wants, I could also publish there a full album of their own music.

I think it could be a good way to spread the magnificient music that is being made here beyond the boundaries of tubular.net forums and lyricless.com.

The limit is imposed by the copyright: I can only publish what I'm authorized to by the copyright holder, wich means that no cover versions nor remixes can be published without the written authorization of either Warner, Virgin, Universal or whomever owns the rights now.

So, what do you think about it? Is someone interested?

Yes i've already seen something about me on LastFm and i don't know how it was done because i didn't asked and done anything myself .

Also funny you talk about this because i'm currently living a weird misadventure about music website and copyright . This is about a strange music/mp3's download website  ( not sure but i think it's a Russian website ) where i've found my music for sale . They sell an album that i've initially upload on Jamendo.com for free download . Jamendo is a good website , i like their philosophy , but there's always people to make money with the work of other one . And now i must to contact these guys to tell them to stop to sell my music but who knows what could happen after that ? Do they will accept ?

In summary , i'm ok Wayfarer , you can publish what you want from me but please don't sell anything . My music is free and published with Creative Commons license ( you can share , you can't modify and for no commercial purpose ) .

It's always a good thing to get the possibility to share his own music with other people , so i want to thank you if you decide to choose my music .

Please , sorry if you think i'm a bit rough with you . You can be sure it's not what i've wanted to do !
Hope you'll understand my English !

Thanks Wayfarer !

Hi Wayfarer,

Good idea and I'm interested... but a big naive question from me:

What does a publisher do exactly?

Sorry to seem a bit unknowledgable!

Cheers,
Terry.

Well, no one has created the page: it's a feature of last.fm. When a last.fm user listen to one of your tracks with last.fm enabled player, the site automatically creates a blank page for the artist and for the song... but there's actually no music uploaded. If you create an artist account on last.fm you can claim your music pages, edit them and also upload your music and let other users listen to it and even download it.

Yes, it's a pity but there are a lot of sites doing that. They claim that, under the russian law, they are allowed to sell the music...  but they're selling everything they put their hands on, even if it has a free license. It's not fair.. and not legal. The only way to make them stop is to sue them... but then they just close the site and open a new one. It's exasperating!

Yes, CC:BY-NC-ND license, I know it. That is the license I used on my first works. Now I use CC:BY-NC-ND to allow also remixes and derivative works based on mine.

That's a good question. ;-) In his case, just publish. I'll just make a compillation, format the ID3 tags, make a cover and I'll upload it to last.fm, allowing others to listen and downloading. Nothing more and nothing less.

Well, maybe I could make this on a regular basis, maybe one compillation every quarter with all the tracks published here...

I'ts still just an idea. I'm open to opinions and comments.

3:06am here, time to sleep, gentlemen. See you!

If you are a fan of Mike Oldfield you must check out the artist Tubular Tos. On Soundclick.com you'll find 48 amazing tracks. But Mike Oldfield is not the only source of inspiration: others mentioned are Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre. Without the backing of a label Tubular Tos has created some very nice music. You'll be amazed of the variation in sound, and the overall quality of the production. You can listen to full tracks for free. Note that some Russian sites sell Tubular Tos' music without license. His music is supposed to be free. The music is also available on Jamendo. Check it out, you'll love it!

Hi Wayfarer - good idea! :)

I've often wondered why the Tubular.net musicians don't make greater use of last.fm. I checked the links to everyone else's last.fm pages, and most people don't have many listeners at all. This is a shame - I'm sure a lot more people are listening than last.fm claims. I'm doing well as I use last.fm a lot, I participate in a few groups and I've made some friends there. I've even paid for a few campaigns to play my music to fans of Mike Oldfield and other artists, which got a few hundred listeners.

From what you say about copyright etc, I'd guess we are only talking about original fan tracks, correct? :)

I'm more than happy to have a couple of my tracks on a compilation if there's space for them. I already have a last.fm label of my own (Injader Sounds) for my albums, so I don't need to release entire albums on another label (but the idea is a good one for those who don't have a label set up).

Do you want to choose one of your favourite tracks from each musician or should the musicians choose their own? Or should other members of the community make those decisions?

I actually just found a last.fm group - "Instrumental" - that would be perfect for us. There are no members and I can't join it, so I have contacted last.fm support to see if I can get access to relaunch that group. This could be a great way to get more listeners for our tracks.

Let me know if you need anything. :)

I am now the owner of the Instrumental group on last.fm:

http://www.last.fm/group/Instrumental

I've linked myself, Langdana, Viper, Ian Hubball and Synthetic Substance to the group. I've also linked Pandora and Injader Sounds.

If anyone else has a last.fm page, either post a link to it here or join the last.fm group and you can ask to be connected there.

This is another great way to get more listeners. Plus it really helps if the musicians claim their page and add some info to it. :)
