OK so im not officially a floyd rose freak, and after looking at my collection of guitars, ive realised thats id like to modify my second ever guitar. Its a westfield sg copy and well any guitar players out there will know that these fetch about 150 euro (or 100 pounds), this being that it is a copy of the gibson and it has pickups that probably cost about 3 pence to make.

as i look at it i realize how good it looks though, and well id like to bring it back to life, for starters im going to respray the head- over he westfield logo, and put my signature on it, (with aid from a freind of mine studying art and design) the im going to replace my humbuckers with better ones, and then i thought, "hey, why not try to see if i can get a floyd rose locking system installed".

is it possible to do by yourself? i hear roumours that floyd rose make bridges that can be easily installed to Gibson les pauls, but i was wondering if i could do it to my sg, with as little money spent as possible.

any advice on this anyone?

Have you ever played a guitar with a floyd rose, if yes and you like it then you can ignore this.

I use the heel of my hand to damp the strings when playing and this is very difficult on a floyd rose (for me anyway) - the thing sticks out a lot and It catches on my hand all the time.

You should look at the system used by PRS - still a trem but without the aukward little allen key string tighteners.

Just my thoughts.  Ray

eeeh  well..... - there no accountin for taste!!!!  I'm sure an SG will look interesting with one fitted.  Send us a pic when you're done!

I use finger bends rather than bendy bars!!  I find the trems always cause the whole 6 string to bend and change tone when i'm getting serious at bending the strings.  I would actualy like a PRS custom 24 with out tremelo.  I always get a very strange look from the guitar shops when I ask to try one of them...!!   Ray

The retrofit vibrato bridges that you can easily put on a Gibson arnt fully floating iirc. To put a free floating floyd rose on ala Satriani you would have to route the body, which isnt such a task if you have the tools for it. I wouldnt do that to any of my guitars, but i supose it would make quite an intresting instrument!
