Hi, I've been thinking about this for a while. I was just wondering if anyone had heard the 22 minute instrumental at the end of their 1995 Album "Made in Heaven" as a commemoration of Freddie's death about four years earlier. I just want to know what people think of it compared to Mike's own sidelongs (e.g. Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations, etc.)

I liked this track, and what first appealed to me was the length of the track itself. What made it an extra pleasure was the fact that this track wasn't on the tracklist on the back cover of the CD. I thought it was a very peaceful, emotional piece, in stark contrast to some of their earlier pieces. I still listen to it from time to time. It reminds me a lot of Ommadawn and Hergest Ridge because of how peaceful it is, and there are a lot of intense moments within the piece. I also think it is fairly spooky how the piece is intercut with snippets of Freddie speaking, like the whole Album is. A bit like "Dark Side of the Moon" when I come to think of it...

Anyway, what does everybody else think? I think it's also worth comparing Brian May's awesome Brighton Rock Solo performance from Wembley in 1986 to some of Mike's "shorter" sidelongs such as Taurus 1 and Music from the Balcony.

Yes I love this piece.  I agree it's in stark contrast to many of thier earlier pieces, in that it seems more laid back. Not to say that many of Queen's earlier pieces couldn't be relaxing.  I wonder how many beats per minute this has compared to slower tracks such as "Who Wants To Live Forever"  "One Year of Love" or "My Melancholy Blues", I think these tracks especialy the latter
two have a late night smoky jazz club type feel to them ;), where it would appear that  John or Freddie the tracks respective writers)  have been deserted by their partners, and are sitting there thinking and possibly drowning their sorrows.

WWTLF, I seem to think of open countryside, hills, I don't need  Highlander to visualise mental images in my mind.  The emotional intensity of this song has often moved me to tears, not neccessarily 'cause I'm sad, but I did get quite emotional as this  was played at a friend's funeral.

Sorry I've drifted off the topic of  Untitled Instrumental, yes I think this does have a similar feel to that of Hergest Ridge or  Ommadawn,   I guess like Omm and HR it seems to break every rule in the book, to expect the unexpected  . Yes there is much peace and tranquility here, but  also gets very intense.  I do wonder if the Freddie speaking snippets were inspired by Floyds DSOTM.

I'll have to listen to Brian's guitar solo from Wembley '86, (I've Wembley'86 on CD, it's just I don't have a turntable ATM) and compare that to Taurus 1 and MFTB, saying that I don't have MFTB, since a casette player chewed up my tape a number of years ago, I can't seem to find Heaven's Open on CD, I'd love to hear MFTB again.   I guess this gives me something to do  tomorrow after I've got busy drilling holes in my wall,as I've a full length mirror I'd like to get fixed to my wall.

If you feel a little glum to Hergest Ridge you should come.

I've just realised that I don't have Taurus 1, well I do but I can't play it as I've only got it on good old fashioned LP and I currently don't have a turntable  :O . Trying to find QE2 on LP is harder than trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Methinks the time has come to update my hifi, my CD player is 13 years old, , still works but can be a bit tempramental at times, sometimes the CD tray closes quickly, jolting the disc out of place( nearly thought it had  damaged my CD of Hergest Ridge, this way).
The Cambridge Audio "Azur 640C V2" sounds highly desireable.
I guess one thing at a time, I've just shelled out on a car, but new  hifi equipment  is  next on my shopping list.

Speaking of Brian May and Mike I'd love to see them both work together on an album, WHOHOOO!!!!  :D  :D.  How about it then guys????

Speaking of Brighton Rock , I love the Wembley '86 version, I also like the version from Live Killers, that's so beautifully haunting   , pity I can't play it as I only have Live Killers on LP. I'll guess I'll need to wait for Play.com to have another offer on Queen CDs or HMV have a sale on. To complete my Queen collection on CD will cost me a fortune.

The Queen track you're speaking of is fairly reminescent of Tangerine Dream, for me. And to tell you the truth, I'm not much of a fan of Tangerine Dream. But since the track is there more for its symbolism rather than its "experimentality", I see no fault in it. I've listened to it all the way through just a few times. I enjoy more the ambient pieces of Brian Eno, such as "The Plateaux of Mirror" with Harold Budd, and the most, say, redeeming aspect of Queen's track is how unusual it is for the band.

I've also heard saying that the end of the album is sequenced like that intentionally to make the shortest Queen track ever (4-second-long track 12) followed by their longest ever.

Oh, that's interesting. I've always wondered why they had a 4-second track of them all going "yeah". It seemed so out of place. I remember listening to the Album on shuffle once, not even knowing that "yeah" was separate, so it scared the living daylights out of me when I heard it, after the end of the track "Made in Heaven".

I know what you mean. When I went looking for QE2, I couldn't find it anywhere. I spent about two months looking for it in Virgin, HMV and I eventually decided to buy it off the Internet for about £8. This was a new CD, not a second-hand one though, so I was very pleased to find it in the so-called "mint condition". I had only heard Taurus 1 from the Album, and I loved the sort of emotional, sea-faring finalé at the end of the song. I was also very moved by the lullaby sounds from "Molly". Anyway, that's for the QE2 thread.

Looking back on my original post, I think it was only length-wise in the way I was comparing the Brighton Rock Solo and Taurus 1. They are two contrasting pieces in terms of the electrical capacity they both contain. I think the Untitled Track is more like Taurus 1 than the Brighton Rock Solo. The Untitled Track and Taurus 1 both have a slightly dreamy feeling to them, and they both make me feel like I'm floating in some way. Taurus 1 makes me feel like I'm floating on water looking up at a cloudless sky, whilst the Untitled Track makes me think I'm actually floating amongst the clouds.

Anyway, that's all I can think of for the moment.
TTFN.
