Well, it IS pop, because it's popular, pop stands for popular music, no? In 1973/4, Tubular bells and Hergest ridge were pop, but symphonic/progressive rock as their genres, if they can be catagorised
Pop has almost become a genre, because all of the songs are similar. Take 'man in the rain' and 'moonlight shadow' as two examples of Mike Oldfield pop
Even thrash/death metal bands that are considered the best in the world are not popular, in a mainstream way. Rammstein's music is more accessible than that of Slayer, Machinehead, Pantera etc. They make it this way, they direct their music in an attempt to achieve a wide audience, THAT is why they are not greatly respected at 'metal camp'
