I was in a small fast food restaurant the other day, and one customer asked "give me your equivalent to the Big Mac". Maybe we could find out the "trademark track" that people should try if they don't know Mike Oldfield's music yet. I could add a small box somewhere on the home page. Ommadawn?
This would work very well if legal music downloads were more developped. But it's coming fast.
You arrive on tubular.net, fans recommend you Omamdawn, you click and pay, and instant gratification, you download it.

Maybe add a "What's Mike Odlfield's best album?" question to the FAQ (which would need to be updated BTW)?

Great idea, but difficult. Fans' opinions are so divided on this one. Many say Ommadawn, perhaps even more say Amarok. But then there's more people who say that Amarok is 'crap' than those that say the same about Ommadawn, or so it seems... Then of course there's the not so small fraction of TSODE worshippers... and of course the Bell fans! I think those are the four, plus maybe TBII - the ones that get mentioned the most as being "Mike's best". But the equivalent of the Big Mac - after all considering is done I'd say it'd have to be Tubular Bells. Even if Ommadawn is perhaps better, there's also a greater chance of people not liking it upon first listening. Even more so for Amarok. And if you put up TSODE then many will, upon first listening, get the impression that they've hit upon a "new age" artist. TB seems to be pretty easy for many people to get into, and if you don't like it at all, I guess there's not a big chance that you will like any of Mike's other works much better.
As for an entry in the FAQ, that would of course provide an opportunity to go a little deeper into the matter, giving a short description of each album (of a small selection), so everyone can figure out for themselves what might be most to their liking.

If I interpreted your request rightly, Olivier, you're looking for a track that instantly identifies Mike Oldfield. Well... I'd be tempted to say 'Moonlight Shadow', but maybe people would end up like some friends of mine here, who still wonder why this wonderful woman singer with that great voice has got a man's name. :D   So I'll simply say TB (I), although I think I have to say that, if people will have to download it, I don't know how many of them will be willing to download 45+ minutes of music - 'cause if you put on TB (or Ommadawn, or HR, or Incantations, or any of the longer works) to give people an idea of what Mike Oldfield's music is, I think you've gotta put the whole thing up - IMHO you can't get any idea at all from a 4'15'' 45-rpm edit. :)

Hmm.. the biggest issue i have is that Mike has been through so many styles, the two main threads being the 80's & 90's vocal tracks (which would probably be MS as his biggest selling and most accessable song), and the long instrumentals.

TB is instantly recognised by a huge chunk of the western world, and as has been said, probably the most easy to appreciate.

So, for the "Big Mac" theory, the one everyone knows, the one with the lowest common denominator factor, it is TB (maybe a 8 minute mix of intro/finale).

Perhaps it could be a live recording of TB (e.g. from Bremerhaven 1982).

I think Mike's music is too different from album to album to be able to say which is the best. If they were all the same style, yes we probably could. But we can only pick our favourites. Mike's music is so different, each album is like apples and oranges. There's no way to say which exactly is the best one since they're all in their own category.

That's a nice idea, though. I like it.

Perhaps we can select different albums that capture the different aspects of Mike's music making. IMO, Tubular Bells and Amarok are the quintessential Oldfield albums; Ommadawn and Crises are among the most accessible; QE2 and Discovery are the most commercial; etc. Coming from that perspective, it can give great results. In Brian Eno's fan page Enoweb, they have a very interesting "chart". They say the two "benchmark" albums are Another Green World and Apollo, and make a list: If you like Apollo, get albums so and so; if you like AGW's songs, get albums so and so; if you like AGW's instrumentals, get albums so and so. Maybe this is plagiarism, but we can try something similar, can't we? :)

Sorry for the OT, but of all his albums you think QE2 is the most commercial? Could you perhaps explain why you think so? Just curious.

Might not be the most commercial, but QE2 is close to the top of the list, and certainly was the first commercially-oriented album Mike released. It's easy-going and accessible, has short songs (potential singles), two covers... you know, put next to Incantations and Platinum, you can see the difference. Nothing wrong with that, though. I can count many commercially-oriented albums that rule. QE2 is one of them.
