Who could Mike call upon to re-work re-record or re-master his back catalogue? Should he return to his fine old pal Tom Newman? Should Trevor Horn be allowed within a thousand miles of him?

I think the re-master work can be done by any professional engineer.
But a remix album has do be done by progressive electronic artists and not by trance artists like York / Torsten Stenzel.

Do you know Krautrock groups from the 70s ? E.g. Popol Vuh's revisited & remixed Album is very good. It would be great if Oldfield's tracks would be treated like that:

popol vuh

This is a fine abstract Tubular Bells re-interpretation/Remix:

I agree. I think there's some very skilled and well trained music technicians out there these days.

close tie between David Bedford and Brian Eno. None of them would try to make a hit album or a hit single. Both are great artists in their own right.
Trevor Horn? Hell, he represents everything I hate about "name" producers. And I don't use the word "hate" lightly.

What's wrong with Trevor? TB2 sounds fantastic...

actually I kind of think Mike copied his style a bit for the recording of TB2003.

I agree with Jesse about Trevor Horn. It's because of him that TBII sounds like it sounds, and I love the way it sounds.

Remixing? Nah, none of Mike's works are fit to be remixed. They're perfect as they are. As for remastering, I wouldn't pick George Martin, as he's going deaf because of his age and he's not as good as he was. But his son Giles is really, really good. Paul Hicks at Abbey Road did an excellent remastering job on the Beatles catalogue for the recent Beatles in Stereo and Beatles in Mono boxes, so he may very well be able to do justice to Mike's catalogue.

TB2 sounds like a Mike Oldfield midi file being played back. You're right about TB2003. I really dislike that one too.

We agree to disagree :)

I love the crystal clearness of TB2003. I also love the haunting original but the composition is so good, I also had the have a clear recording of it.

Mike Batt could probably make a Good Fist of the Job... He more or less had a Go on the Flairck Album featuring Maggie Reilly

I never liked original TB. :$ It's an amazing composition performed badly (of course I know the history, limited studio time etc. etc., but I still don't like listening to it). TB2003 repairs all the mistakes and flaws and I love it dearly.

Yeah I get that....

listen to harmonics and peace, that's just something that had to be recorded right.

Imagine that the emperor concert by Beethoven was only recorded badly with a broken microphone...

@ Navaira: sorry to disagree with you, but to me TB2003 did not improve on the original simply because I don't like the music. :) Of course the playing and the sound and the mixing on TB2003 are a jillion times better than everything on TB 1973, but the music is exactly the same. And I can't say I like it. Indeed, I don't. :D
