Hello hello hello, step right up, don't be shy, see if you can work out musicalconnections between Mike and these artists (some are easy, others contrived):

The Beatles
Genesis
Vangelis
Pink Floyd
Paul Simon
The Nice
The Who
Rick Wakeman
The Buggles
Humblebums
Manfred Mann's Earth Band
The Rutles
Stealer's Wheel
Blind Faith
Brand X
Asia
Thin Lizzy
Wham!
Family
Yes
Chieftains
Camel

That'll do for now wink

If you know the answer to one of these, post your reply. However, please only post one answer in case there are people out there who want to try and answer some of these themselves.

Here's an example of a musical connection:

Mike and the Beatles (there is more than one connection, and chronology does not matter):

Mike worked with Viv Stanshall on Tubular Bells
Viv Stanshall was a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
Paul McCartney (of the Beatles) produced the Bonzo's single I'm the Urban Spaceman

There are more connections, if there's one that isn't here, post a reply with it.

Have fun!

The first one of those I can get is Vangelis.

Mike did two songs with Jon Anderson.
Jon is one half of Jon & Vangelis.

HINT: Heaps of the others are Jon Anderson related.

Hello everyone

OK, so I'll stick to only one.

Mike's link to The Buggles is Trevor Horn, who co-produced TB2.

Rob
:-)?

Can I do another one?

Go ahead Rob.

Hey rosko, there's a lot of Jon Andersen, but there might be other ways to get there without going via him. I'm interested in who goes where. But you can go via Jon if you wish.

Wow, a quiz. What a good idea!

Manfred Mann's Earth Band:

LP 'MMEB 1971-1973' (phonogram 6438085), liner notes to I'M GONNA HAVE YOU ALL:
'...which fades on a Mike Oldfield type overlay supplied by organ, piano, Moog and guitars.'

That's not what you had in mind?
OK, OK...
of course the answer is: Chris Thompson.

Phil Collins, who of course plays drums on QE2, is also the drummer of Brand X.

The Buggles: Trevor Horn (TBII producer) was the mastermind behind The Buggles and especially behind their only real hit, "Video Killed the Radio Star". smile

Mike and Thin Lizzy

The link is Clodagh Simmonds who played keyboards on Thin Lizzy's song 'Sarah' on their 'Shades of a blue orphanage' album.
Sho also sang, of course on Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn Amarok and Tubular Bells 3.

Connection to Wham! :

Mike Oldfield went to a vocal coach to learn how to sing for "Heaven's Open". This same vocal coach had helped out George Michael, who was once a member of WHAM!

The biography of Mike at Dark Star bears this out.

Connection between Mike and Paul Simon:

Paul Simon once wrote a song for Philip Glass. Mike did a cover of the Philip Glass piece "North Star" on "Platinum".

bennyboy:

that's not the Paul Simon connection I was thinking of (I thought I said people Mike's actually worked with, rather than covered. Otherwise people like Cliff Richard could be on the list).

Not the Wham! connection either, but then again I didn't know that, so thanks for that piece of info, bennyboy.

OK, I didn't say artists who've worked with Mike. But this is the Related Artists topic.

Connections only between artists who have performed/recorded with Mike. Or produced an album etc.

David Bedford has arranged the orchestral parts on Camel's wonderful 'The Snow Goose' album (anyone who hasn't heard it yet, check it out!). I guess there's no need to point out the Bedford / Oldfield connection wink

What a good idea that quizz...
I guess I have the Pink Floyd link... In fact there are many...
First, I'll say Rick Fenn (Five Miles Out)
He did an albumn with Nick Mason called 'Profiles' in which Maggie Reilly have a duet with David Gilmour : A Lie For A Lie
The second link I see is Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom where Mike played guitar on one track and produced by Nick Mason again....

I'll make one of the Anderson leaps:
Asia==>Steve Howe==>Yes==>Anderson==>Oldfield.

Or was Steve Howe with GTR, the "other" 80s guitar-god supergroup?

Very good.

So far. (or is it fa so?)

If there's a link that's already up, but you've found another one between Mike and the artist, put it up anyway. Vinz said there are lots of Pink Floyd links, and the one I thought of first still isn't up.

[Hint: if you are really struggling, read through the old forums for help]

Keep up the good work!

OK. Nothing new since I congratulated you. Have you given up? You can do more than one, you know (just follow Rob, bennyboy, Archangel Foster and Carsten). Or do you need help? wink
