Hi everyone,

A couple of people have asked this same question, but the answers are not what I was looking for. So, again:

Do you think the HDCD-Remasters are worth buying if you allready own the original?

I mean, first of all, this new improved artwork isn't state-of-the-art at all. Photo's are cut in half, and , like with 5MO, the booklet contains no lyrics, while the 'old' booklet does!

Second, I own a respectable Onkio hi-fi set, with a great pair of speakers. But allthough the sounds 'seems' to sound a bit clearer, the GREAT sound Improvement that I was expecting is not there. At least not on 5MO, Ommadawn and Killing Fields, the 3 remasters that I bought.

So, what do you think: are they worth it?

i think they are...that's why i bought them all. but that's just my opinion. i don't much care about the booklets...remastered albums just sound much better, fresh or something...

I think it depend on you.

They sound better (I think of the earlier album, TB, HR, Ommadawn, Incantations), but the booklet are ugly.

It depend on what is ok for you.

Do you prefer better sound than better booklet ?

For me I think both are important, but the booklet of the old CD are not so nice too. frown

Well, I'm just a die-hard fan of Mike, so I have to have it all, even if the sound quality wasn't updated.  :D

With some pieces, I think I can hear a clearer sound. But generally, I really didn't notice anything about updated sound.. (but then again, my boxes aren't really special)

And if you love a cd-rack full of cd's which make the bell if you place them next to eachother, you REALLY have to get the cd's.  :D

I have the old Tubular Bells vinyl and the remastered sacd. I can`t say it sounds much better from sacd, but it sounds different! Like a re-mixed version. For example, the short Key-sonds at the beginning of TB1 are quite far-off in space on the vinyl, but they seem to be very close´to your ears on the sacd.
The old cd version sounds terrible in comparison to the vinyl.
The described effects haven´t anything to do with my equipment, Im quite sure.

If you have a very expensive stereo and a very good set of ears then you might here some difference. I bought the remastered Amarok out of interest to see how they had redone the booklet and thought it was a pile of shit. What was the point of removing the fantastic little story. And they didn't say anything remotely interesting about the album. It all defy's logic why yet again no imagination was put into these rereleases. The whole thing smells of record company greed if you ask me.

Remastered editions sound great - compare remastered "Discovery" with standard edition. The sound is fresh and the basses are much better quality

I'm not sure that they did as good of a job as they could have on the remastering.  They do sound pretty good, though.  Not as good as the YES Rhino remasters.  I agree about the total ball drop on the booklets, though.  In most cases they are not as good as the ones on the old CDs.  And I still don't understand why somebody didn't raise a big stink about the erroneous "Crisis" labeling.  Why did Mike or somebody else not demand that they fix that?  The name of the album is "Crises", right?  How silly for the record label to give an artist's album a new name because of bad proofreading.   :/

I own the remastered version of Exposed, and the sound is great on that CD, but I wish the booklet had more information.
