Sad day for music and fans of Pink Floyd of which I know there are many on this forum of course.Strangely and co-incidentaly I had been spending the entire afternoon here listening to an album called Madcap`s Flaming Duty which was recorded as a tribute to Syd Barrett by Tangerine Dream.Such a wonderful wonderful album that is actualy quite reminescent of an 80`s/90`s Pink Floyd in some ways. And then whilst listening I found myself looking at some different Floyd fansites online etc to see if there was any mention of this album when I stumbled upon the terrible news.

Great keyboard player of course as well as being hugely innovative and influential particularly in the early years of the band I think. But then again I don`t think you can underestimate the massive part he played on their 70`s material either.Thoughts go out to all his family, friends and fans of Rick`s music.

I liked him a lot. He had intellect, played fine keyboards, and had a good voice(years ago). Some of the Dark Side era vocals(spotlight vocals) were him. My mom, about a year before she died of cancer saw his picture, said he was handsome.I thought that was funny. Now he died of cancer. I'm pissed that Rick's gone.

I sat outside for a while and thought......September 15th.?...? Overnight the weather went from a long brutal triple digit summer to 70 degrees(front brought in by Ike). Then Richard Wright dies. Wow. This man meant a lot to me. He was very much like Mike Oldfield in his music and thinking. He was PF's Lyle Mays, or to make a more accurate comparison, Tony Banks, and that is a compliment. I think the world over, PF probably had a larger fan base than Genesis. I can't see a Pink Floyd without him. He was a user of a lot of the same stuff at the same time as MO. Farfisa organ, then later the same synths of the time(s). I'm sad for Rick's family and friends. I am glad that Rick had a rich life of great music, great moments on the biggest stages in the world, admiration by millions. He deserved it all, he was fantastic at what he did. I listened to September 15th just before I got on here to find out....dammit. I'm gonna listen to Time and his solo album Broken China now.
Jim

I saw the topic title and my heart sank.  Dammit, I enjoyed his music tremendously, both with Floyd and his own.  So much great stuff.  I swear to God, his vocal on "Wearing The Inside Out" still sends shivers down my spine.  He was a classy gent and I was overjoyed when he came out of exile to rejoin the lads, however much his contributions may have been.  Gonna be playing his stuff all night.

Ditto what Jim said.

Dear goodness... Rick was probably my favourite Pink Floyd member, and I'm really shocked to see him go so soon. I really didn't expect that. Big, big shame. Very sad news. Earlier this year, was Klaus Dinger. Nasty. At the very least, there was still time for the four of them to join together one last time. Sad day.

Very sad news. There was something very likeable and gentlemanly about him. I loved his singing voice, and some of his songs are my favourite Pink Floyd tracks. Those early numbers like Paintbox, See Saw, Remember A Day and Summer 68 mean a lot to me, I never tire of listening to them. Wearing The Inside Out also, his singing has an air of dignity about it. And his keyboard playing was wonderful, at turns soothing, disturbing and completely out there.

I heard this on the radio this morning, very sad news. I didn't even realise he was ill. His duet with David Gilmour on 'Echoes' is one of my favourite musical moments. I can't really say anything else, except we'll all miss you.

Jim

Well you had me thinking about that yesterday Jim I must admit. There I was listening to this album about Syd Barrett and I was kind of thinking about Syd and Pink Floyd. And then I thought "Oh I wonder if any Floyd fans out there have heard this album"?You know just curious what they would make of it I suppose. For a lot of years I was quite heavily into PF but it`s very rare now for me to listen to any of their albums.I don`t really know why that is to be honest because I still have a huge admiration for them in a way.But yeah of course at that exact moment I started to wonder about them again Rick had passed away.Almost immediatly in fact it struck me about what you`d said earlier about co-incedinces and September the 15th.And Bill Evans as well the Jazz Pianist to whom that track is dedicated to died September 15th 28 years ago now.I mean I don`t want to make a big cosmic thing out of it or anything but you certainly got me wondering about it all.And oddly enough even before you mentioned it yesterday whenever I think about Pat Metheney the first piece of music that always comes into my head is September 15th.And now even more so I guess.

Anyway it`s nice to see raven4x4x mention Echoes there,on which Rick plays such a massive part I agree. But yeah that was the first track that I heard from Pink Floyd that really got me hooked big time.I was about 13 years old and I can remember sitting on my knees over this crappy little tape player that I had back then just been completely blown away by it all.Eveybody talked about Pink Floyd being the big "Hi-Fi enthusiasts" band back then if you like. But even on this cheapo tinny fidelity thing they sounded awesome to me.I mean I can`t even describe how jaw dropping that experience was in some respects. And then I think listening to Floyd and especialy some of their longer instrumental passages certainly helped me to appreciate the music of Mike Oldfield at such a young age as well. You know I kind of like had a reference point in a way which 99% of all the other music I listened to back then would`nt have given me.I mean Pink Floyd were innovative and daring and pretty bizzare at times. But they nearly always seemed to have something captivating and intriguing about them that somehow appealed to the common man.Even in some of their more stranger/experimental passages of music such as Echoes itself of course.

@Major Gowan I`m right there with you on those early tracks from Rick which are also some of my own favourites as well.Relics still tends to be the album that my hand goes to first for instance if I`m ever in the mood for some Pink Floyd. And I know it`s kind of throwaway stuff and Waters and Mason supposedly slagged it off somewhat. But I`m actualy a big fan of Rick`s early song It Would Be So Nice.Yeah great stuff.

Heard it on the radio just before i went out to rehearse.Gutted, totally gutted.I didn't even know he had cancer.as soon as i heard "Pink Floyd keyboard player......" i knew.65's no age at all.
Of all the members of Floyd (except dear old Syd)he seemed the most down to earth member.
Shine on indeed.Gone to The Great Gig In The Sky.

Boy, yes, this was surprisingly painful.
Thankfully i saw him twice, with Gilmour. And remember the cheers he got when he was introduced. But still.
I've been listening to his voice for thirty years now.
Hopefully he's enjoying the Great Gig in the Sky.

A sad day indeed. Another reason for Mike to keep going, and playing music he loves and for fans who love his music. Remember when Mike and Pink Floyd were the top of the charts in the UK in the 70's?They made history by staying in the charts for 2 years.RIP Rick you will be missed. Your generation of music was truly inspiring and will always occupy a place in my CD collection.
Cheers,
Deb and Pixie

I haven't been on here for a number of days, had a bit of of personal crap, but things are much better now.

I found the news on Monday evening, when I turned on my computer and a friend on Myspace had posted a tribute.  I didn't know Rick was ill so it came as somewhat of a shock.

R.I.P Rick, Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

I know when I made a pilgramage to Abbey Road studios someone had created the Dark Side Of The Moon prism and written the names of the members and "Shine On You Crazy Diamonds"
