As was posted in the surfing topic, Romance is available on OMA's page here.

It starts off more than a little trancy, very trancy in fact. It's only a short extract as the announcer started talking halfway through it (says the fan who recorded it), and the quality again isn't too good. I can't really have an opinion on it without hearing the full track, but I don't hear a lot to be negative about really. Sounds like it could be OK, depending on what he does with it.

Oh dear! How can someting so utterly awful be on the same album as something so utterly wonderful as TOAA????  It's not so much the 'dark side of romance' as the bottom of the barrell of dance music.

in some strange way i feel a sense of Bond here. But for me its a good song and i like it.. I also feel a continue from millenium bell. I dont know why but i do.. Maybe because it have the same sounds and techno that we heard from climax part in millenium bell..

Woo, Robert Miles.

Are you SURE this is Mike Oldfield? because it's basically a trance cover of a well known tune the name of which escapes me at the moment...

Isn't that "Lara's Theme"?

It is very clear that the romantic mood of the original was spoiled by lawyers!

Ouch!! Crikey, I really dislike this. I find no trace in it of the Mike Oldfield I love.

In the Google translation of the Oldfield.de review of Romance it says, "One gets second Herpes at the lips and thick Eiterpickel grows faster than one kucken can (sorry, exactly I feel when hearing)."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My thoughts exactly when I heard it!

The reviewer obviously hates this one and feels it may be a joke or a lighthearted arrangement - but then he decides it's a really bad mix. It would be nice to have a more accurate translation of what he says, but the Google one got me laughing here

No, it's not Lara's Theme from Dr. Zhivago.

It's a Spanish guitar theme known as "Romance Anónimo", which, despite its name, has been credited to several authors during the past century. As Mike said in his L&S commentary, it's one of the typical first tunes that novice guitar players learn.

It's a shame he did such a poor cover version of this beautiful theme  :(

I agree with Timshen, that google translation puts my thoughts about this track into words more eloquently than I ever possibly could.

ps Happy birthday Timshen, the big 40 ehh? Its a pity Mike couldn't have written a better track to be premiered on your birthday.

Yucky! Come on, that's a joke! It must be! Though I do hear the cliché 90's Oldfield guitar tone in there... but seriously, is that really a 2005 song?

Now they tell me! I've been complaining about my slow-growing Eiterpickel for years - and I see now that it's all because I was using the thin variety!

Looks like OMA's site is having the same "technical difficulties" as my own. Still, a few seconds trawling around the wonderful world of Mike sites produced the song.

I'm neutral on Romance, not enough to critic. But Mike wanted to play with various source material, the stuff that currently holds his attention, so I guess this has it's place on the album.

This track is different from the other leaked tracks, but not a million miles from other works he has released before. I will not want to get Mike to slot into any of his previous "slots", and I'm happy if he wants to jump around genres.

The clue is in the title of the album

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

I have not heard Mikes "romance" yet but I Fuond a tab for
"romance anonimo" and made a dance version of the tune.
I just changed the 3/4 time signature so its in 2/4 now.

Melody and harmonies: 1--4--7-
Kick(uglytrancesound): 1---5---
Bass                       :  --3---7-
synthbass                : 1--4--7-
(ok maybe somebody understands these weird numbers) Anyway
it is very simple really and a child could do this, it sounds something like "millenium bell". Then I added some reverb and it sounds like some horrible 90s dancemusic.

although the melody is ok, please tell me it is not like this!
Still I would not be surprised since Mike uses this so called
3,3,2, pattern so much.

:/

Totally agree with you Timshen TOAA rocks my boat completely, an amazing track that does everything a modern MO should, powerful, original and great playing.

Hands up though if you think Romance is the worst track Mike has ever put his name to. It makes Speak(Thou You Only Say Farewell) seem like a really great moment in Mike's musical career. I mean the MB might have been a naff piece of trance music but at least it was reasonably catchy.

And he wonders why his fans are always so obsessed with his early music.

And he's sick and tired of those type of fan.

Let Mike be himself :D
