Ive just Heard the Viv Stansall Version of this Today...
Its not what I expected .. Im a Bit Dissapointed in
a Way as I expected a Manic version where he was maybe
trying to Sing in Time...But on the plus side the Track reeks
of Character.. You can almost Imagine being at the Manor..
Also the Arrangement at the end seems Diff although im
Listening to it on another PC im not used to so it might be
just diff Levels on Here .. But it Sounds great at the End when
the Instrumentals Kick in.. I can see why it was left off the Main Release though... But still great fun to listen to
:D

Yeah, I consider both to be good in their own ways. I too love Viv's 'unique' commentary on this, and whilst the audio quality isn't quite what it could be, it's still a classic bit of humour. Now I have it, I'd much rather hang on to it :)

Everyone's interpretation is different, and everyone has a right to that opinion. There is no "right" one, I am adding this post to communicate my thoughts to share them with like-minded souls who will be able to comment in good nature.

Speaking over music is a very Viv thing, though. The whole thing is really very Viv, and wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on a Bonzos album.

Viv was of course at The Manor recording "Let's Make Up And Be Friendly" with the Bonzos at the time. One of the tracks on the album was Rawlinson End, which Viv later developed into a radio series, an album, a book and a film. It was about life in a country house, and Viv's take there on life in a stately home and the English upper classes is very similar to that in his Sailor's Hornpipe commentary. It's really a classic example of his observational humour, though drink seems to have made his style slightly less dead-pan than usual, but only slightly...
He had a wonderful way of uttering lines like "A pale Sun poked impudent marmalade fingers through the grizzled lattice glass and sent the shadows scurrying, like convent girls menaced by a tramp." as if there was nothing ridiculous about them at all.

I think it was probably the right decision to leave it off the final album, but it definitely makes a brilliant thing to have as an extra.

Can somebody send this alternate ending to me?  I don't want to buy the entire boxed set just to hear two minutes at the end, and, in fact, I wouldn't even know where to buy it.  But I really do want to hear this, just from a completist's point of view.

I prefer the drunken stomp version; the Stanshall voiceover version. Where else can you find such lyrical gems as "Recently Revived Members of the Public"... which would be a perfect name for an Oldfield tribute band?

Where the Falls of Minnehaha
Flash and gleam among the oak-trees,
Laugh and leap into the valley."
