Hello Everyone,

I've just finished a new recording; it's probably my most ambitious to date. I sort of had Incantations in the back of my mind while I was writing and recording this, but then again, Incantations is my favourite MO album, so it's probably always inthe back of my mind :-)

I hope you like it! It's called "Sailor's Warning," the first one on the page:

Very very nice track, Ktran. I like the beginning (reminds me of Wind Chimes) and how it develops and the little Red Shift hint in there :). The bass also sounds great. And the guitar sounds really good as well. I like how everything fits together. Flows nicely. The only thing I don't like about it is that there are so few instruments. I keep expecting more to come in and build and become 'full' but they never do. Also sounds a tad repetative but that is due to the same reason.

Altogether, very good. You're stuff sounds great, my friend.

:)

congrats, it sounds lovely
i like the bass line at the very start of the track it really gives a lot and drives the track very well, also that sort of ethnical drummy (dunno what it is) percussion instrument, one thing i would change, although they sound great , i think it some points the voice sounds too dry and to upfront, his is more well-driven than hers, and at some points it sounds, just as if they were out of the song (sound, not performing)

nice track worthed the listen!

came to edit, as k. reminded me, i was wrong, and i reviewed the wrong track :) , so the comments before are of red shift, enjoyable as a i said,
i've listened to sailors now :) more symphonic and epic :) beautiful track too

An excellent track Khoa. The midi strings tend to spoil it, but there's never an easy way to making it sound more realistic. The best bits are when you have real guitars upfront, especially in the section with the acoustic guitar. Your electric guitar sound is very similar to that used in Ommadawn. Have you considered making a section of this as a cover track? I know it's been done to death already

Perhaps you could have less of the 'filmy' sounding bits with strings. It kind of lets it down a bit and is the empty, repetitive aspect that Brandon is on about

...thanks a lot for the comments.

Some notes about the recording:

I just got a hold of Cubase VST, but I haven't gotten around to learning the sequencing functions just yet. So every note and every sound on this recording was painstakingly played by hand and recorded to digital audio. So, as with all of my other recordings, there are some timing inconsistencies here and there. This is also my first recording with a bass guitar of any sort. So much fun... but oh so painful... :-)

Re: midi strings: yeah, I'd love to find a string ensemble which

1. Will play for cheap/free
2. Won't scoff at my minimalist arrangements

But oh well, a man can dream, can't he??

Very nice, nice theme and guitar work overall. As Brandon said, perhaps add a couple more instruments, but that's entirely up to you. The wide strings are great, only complaint about them is how they're mixed.. perhaps a bit fuller and more midrange would help and less up-front, as they tend to drown out what's going on in the piece a bit. The acoustic guitar sounds great!

"Shepard's Warning" seems to fit this piece  :)
