I have a friend who suddently claimed that Platinum was MO's best selling album, so I had to ask him if he had been drinking again, and he happily said "yes!"  :yinyang:

But I couldnt find any figures listed online, so if anyone could provide them, it would be neat.

haha, if only he was. But he does have a tendency to make claims that are a bit silly. He also recently kept insisting that Vangelis wasnt a person.

So the reason for getting the figures, would be to get back at him for saying stupid thinges :D
Or something

 Hilarious stuff..Actualy there used to be a DJ over here a few years back(Jimmy Saville guys and gals) who would give away bonus points for identifying artists and correct song titles etc.He especialy loved the old open brackets/closed brackets stuff you know trying to catch you out a little bit.Did`nt get a point if you did`nt know where the brackets went simple as that. But anyway he plays Chariots Of Fire one day and then says.."And an extra bonus point to you there if you could remember the name of the band; Vangelis".

I think on sales figures Platinum is maybe only a gold.Where as Tubular Bells is without doubt Platinum and beyond. Not to be confused with The Platinum Collection of course which was probably only a silver at the most.May have been a Gold I guess but certainly not Platinum no way.Hope that clears that one up a bit.

Now now then now then guys and girls i have a letter her from a Dirk Star "Dear Jim please could you fix it for me......."
(non UK readers please excuse......you needed to be there and seen Jim'll Fix It in the 70's/80's)
I laughed out loud when i saw this Dirk.Jimmy Saville......a name form the (open brackets/close brackets)past!
I don't think that Platinum would have sold more than TB in any country it was released in though.I love both of them but TB was incredible successfull and Platinum far less so.

Oooh aaah..well..Goodness gracious..We seem to have another letter here in Uncle Jim`s postbag guys and gals(rattle rattle jewelery jewelery) from a Mr Caveman none the less..Now then! Gracious!.Here we go.."Dear Jim..Please could you fix it for me to ride in Mike Oldfield`s helicopter with Mike himself over Hergest Ridge this summer solstice wearing only our underpants. It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to see Mike in his undies at high altitude and I would be very grateful if you could make this wish come true.We could stop off for a fag somehwere and maybe drop off Richard Branson along the way while we`re still flying hopefully."
Yours sincerley..Cavey Baby!

Oooh ah! now then now then!..Mike Oldfield indeed..Very busy man very busy man..But as it happens guys and gals we got in touch with old Uncle Michael and well oh..take a look at this..(Imagination required from this point onwards sadly).

See I only have a vague recollection of something like that actualy happening. So then I thought that I might`ve dreamt the whole thing? However if you put "Jim`ll Fix It and Mike Oldfield" into Google the first thing you`ll come up with is this bizzare story here. Scroll down to "Movement 2 and you`ll see what I mean.Given that said article wildly claims that The Peter Pan of Pop once went out on a date with Una Stubbs.I`m guessing it`s probably fair to say that he could be making the whole thing up?Although ashamedly I do remember the episode where Bodie & Doyle chucked the kid out the van and into the cardboard boxes. So it`s kind of interspersed with facts I guess..Some of which are in dubious taste I may add..Although the Una Stubbs bit at the start of the piece did make me laugh I must admit.

God yeah Captain Caveman!!!..I knew that expression came to me too easily.Oh man those were some pretty hot chicks that old Cavey Baby used to hang around with. You know he was a real smooth mover on the quiet I guess.Even hotter than Josie and The Pussycats imho and man were they hot.Maybe there should be a poll here for hottest female cartoon character?Where Daphne from Scooby Doo gets to wrestle out with Penelope Pitstop and her little ol` compact pussycat..   :O And that age old question of course handed down from generation to generation...Wilma or Betty?..Got to be Wilma for me mind.Betty was just way too high maintenance no doubt about it.I mean I think I`d kind of feel sorry for Barney in a way if he was`nt such a bellend. And what the hell Wilma was doing with Fred?I mean come on surely it can`t all be down to the size of the club he used?

Yeah but Betty was much younger.I personally think there was something going on between Penelope Pitstop and the Anthill Mob (remeber them?Used to drive Chuggaboom).
And what i want to know is why where Scooby and Shaggy always so hungry.Actually i think i do know.Must have been hell for them before Tesco went 24 hours.

Mike was definitely on Jim'll fix it.  I saw it.  It when MLS was in the top 10 or 20 or whatever it was - so about 1983 is +/- 1yr.

I have absolutely no idea where these figures came from, and do not know whether they refer to UK or World sales, but I knew I had copied some figures on to an old hard disk drive and have luckily managed to find them.  They are figures from about 2002 I guess as Tres Lunas and onwards are missing.  Just add salt to taste...

Well that kind of fits in with that weird story that I linked above so you`re most probably right. The same show as the one which featured The Proffesionals apparently which I later found out to be late 1978.(I think)So approx a year before I started getting into Mike Oldfield which may be why I only have a vague recollection of it actualy happening.I`m guessing somebody somewhere will have it on tape.Even though it was kind of shown just before VCR`S became really popular over here.If indeed he did appear on the show during that time period of course?Either way it would be pretty cool to see a clip of it loaded up on youtube or something.

Amarok 0.2 million The Millennium Bell 1.5 million
..What can you say?...What on Earth can you honestly say???..Dear Jim..Please could you fix it for me....  :p

In UK terms, Tubular Bells reached no. 1 and stayed on the charts for nearly 5 years, whereas Platinum scraped to no. 24 and hung around for 9 weeks. I just love looking through my old Guinness hit singles/albums books.

There was an episode of Jim'll Fix It where two girls asked if they could record a single. Richard Branson agreed to have it released by Virgin, and if I remember correctly the song in question was utterly awful and Mr. Branson appeared on the show with the young ladies. Maybe it was this kind of thing that drove Mike to think "what the hell am I doing on this label?" and not punk rock after all...
