Went into my local music store with the intention of buying the debut album by Sigur Ross and Hemispheres by Rush as they are two artists I have heard about on this site but never heard before. They didn't have either in stock so I ordered them, I was tempted to buy the new one by Sigur Ross called Takk but decided to wait as I'd been told that their debut album was even better. So I started scouring through the racks determined to find an artist I had never heard before but had heard good things about or who intrigued me. And then I saw Sarah Mclachlan's Remix Album 'Bloom'. Her greatests hits remixed by todays hottest DJs. My friend had played one of her albums for me and I thought, lovely voice but not exciting enough for me. She is an Australian artist with a pleasant pop/rock sound, very popular here, don't know if the rest of the world knows about her. All I had so far of Sarahs was a really beautiful rendition of the Beatles 'Blackbird' on the movie soundtrack cd of 'I am Sam', which featured Sean Penn as a mentally disabled Beatles fan, no correlation between those two things! I thought this remix album might be a little more exciting and I wanted to compare this brand new stuff with Mike's Shade cd to see if it sounded dated in comparison. And it is a beautiful album, spunky, exuberant, not hard core, but it didn't excite me in the way that Shade does. And while I really liked this album and will listen to it often, what it conveyed to me even more was that Mike STILL HAS IT!!!!!!.

Also bought Massive Attacks 'Mezzanine' (c1998) and The Waterboys (c1991)(because my partner likes them) who had hits with 'The whole of the Moon' and 'Fisherman's Blues' from the SALE table.

Just so you know, Sarah Mclachlan's Canadian and is quite well known in North America. I'd suggest you pick up 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy', which she released in the mid-90's: it's a fantastic album.

Oops, sorry about that, I just thought she sounded Australian. Probably won't buy any of her other stuff, the one I heard was a bit too mellow for my taste. But I certainly don't know her music well enough to have an informed opinion as you can plainly see. Thanks for responding.

I was just dredging through these old threads and found Sarah McLachlan here, unexpectedly, so I thought I'd add a bit.

I think she's a tremendous artist - not prolific, but her compositions ring with truth and sincerity, and the best of them are immensely powerful. And she delivers them with a voice that's quite amazing in its range - and boy, she knows how to use it for maximum expressive effect.

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy possibly represents her at her finest (I'd highlight 'Hold On' and 'Possession' as the most powerful tracks), but the later two albums (Surfacing and Afterglow have some fine things on them too.

(I suppose I should add that I dislike the remix albums intensely, and can't imagine what she was thinking of to let them do that to her music.)
