Just seen this at BBC:

Hope that the National Trust can buy it! Abbey Road must live!

I saw this on the news. Its a sad day the day Abbey Road Studios close. Thats the trouble with building new swanky air conditioned music studios. Places like Abbey Road become expensive to maintain. I hope some of the musos that have made their careers at this studio offer some of their profits to keep it open, even if just as a museum. Deb

Abbey Road is still one of EMI`s biggest assets, that`s why they`re looking to sell it because they (EMI) lost so much money last year.1.75 billion according to that piece. There are very few studios in this country that can still "house" an orchestra for a start, not to mention it`s great history of course.A lot of soundtrack music is recorded there I know these days.I`m pretty sure Howard Shore recorded a fair old chunk of his Lord Of The Rings scores at Abbey Road. You`d certianly like to think National Trust invlovement or not, that it was to carry on as a recording studio.

Here`s a quote from Paul McCartney talking about the situation on newsnight...

Quote
"There are a few people who have been associated with the studio for a long time who were talking about mounting some bid to save it," said Sir Paul.

"I sympathise with them. I hope they can do something, it'd be great."

I was talking to a friend of mine about this and we came to the conclusion that the place is a national treasure!Think how many classic albums were recorded there. Not just the Beatles.Pink Floyd for one.
Someone should do something but Sir Paul could certainly afford it.
Typical of the recession though. :(

See I`m not sure if Abbey Road itself is losing money,I`m kind of assuming it`s not actualy.Of course if EMI do decide to sell to raise funds, well yeah anything could happen to it.To actualy record with an orchestra there though is unbelievably expensive.I was reading an interview just like week with Andy Partridge where he was talking about recording some orchestrations there with Mike Batt. They spent one day in the studio and it cost them in the region of £20,OOO.And this all took place just over ten years ago now,so I`m imagining it has`nt got any cheaper.Obviously not everyone goes in there to record with an orchestra, and there`s a certain kind of "aura" and history which undoutably attracts people wanting to record there I guess. That said,as Deb alludes to earlier. There are numerous, cheaper and far better equipped studios nowadays in which to record, that are`nt slap bang in the middle of London for a start.

I was talking to my boss earlier and she suggeted it should become a museum. Not such a bad idea as is iconic and as a cultural landmark it must rank as easily as important as Aunt Mimi's house in Liverpool.
Let's not forget that it was Abbey Road that gave Mike the idea that he could play all the instruments himself on TB.The results of his first foray into this can be heard on Champagne Cowboy Blues which was recorded in Abbey Road.
It was and is a very expensive studio to hire and must be cripplingly expensive to maintain but itn would be a shame to see it go and be converted into flats or some such.
EMI have been in trouble for years due to the download revolution and are notoriously slow on the uptake but if it is sold it really should be sold a going concern.

Well then lets do just that!

Or we could add it to our growing property portfolio along with The Beacon and Througham Slad.
Oh to be a rich man.

Yeah, let's also call Sir George Martin. Is he still alive? How's his health? If Yes to both, he'll get this thing in order toot sweet along with Alan. Tried to call Gilmour and Waters. Right now, Austin is up about a Piper Cherokee crashing into a building not too far from where I am moving. Thank God it wasn't a terrorist related 747 breifcase deal. Could not get through to either. Your not buying any of this are you? Well the plane thing is real. Do I bullshit too much? Bullshit is fun. It seems to bring cheer at "appropriate" times. Don't use it in a child oncology ward or nursing home. That's a bad idea. I hope Abbey Road studios rocks on as it did. I would come over there and kick some butt, but I can't fly. Even 5mg of Xanax would not do it. Your on your own. God bless Abbey Road studio! My 2 cents worth.

George Martin is still alive.Deaf as a post though.Besides he has Air Studio in Twickenham (or somewhere near there)which is the mutts nuts of studios so doubt he'd be interested. If i had that sort of cash i'd buy it!

Maybe the BBC could buy it.They've done shows from there after all.

At least they can't sell off the zebra crossing. I particularly liked the one you did Dirk of Mike throwing the discus and striding across there .

Hi Dirk could you post the pic of Mike with the discus sauntering across the famous zebra crossing? Is that the pic of Mike in the buff by any chance? Looking forward to some sweet eye candy! Deb

Here you go Deb.. Link Mike in studio 2 Abbey Road with a big old band and orchestra, now that would be something.

It`s quite interesting reading some of the debate going on online as to who should buy Abbey Road.Paul McCartney seems to be getting a fair amount of stick for not simply just pulling the cash out of his back pocket like it was small change or something. You know and then many references to the "great musical history and legacy that would be lost" if he did`nt buy it.I don`t know, you could`nt make it up really it beggars belief. What so this guy owe`s the nation now does he? What a bitterly insane place this country is sometimes.

Anyway despite a couple of "digs" here I`ve got nothing against someone like Lloyd Webber wanting to buy Abbey Road.Who at the very least seems to be of the opinion that it should continue as a recording studio.Bit of a pisser for all the anoraks who were halfway to booking their National Express trip to the "museum",but you know I`m sure they`ll soldier on.

Turns out EMI aren't selling and never said they were!It was all a rumour bought on by revelations that EMI and Abbey Road are losing money.
