I have a question for all you musicians.

Each major scale has a relative minor scale which has the same notes in it, for example F major (F, G, A Bb, C, D, E, F)and D natural minor (D, E, F, G, A Bb, C, D).  If a melody uses some or all of these notes, which key is it in?

Then it's your decision! A piece of music is a number of notes. The key is just the way we chose to categorize these notes. Just try to tell which key Incantations is in. That would illustrate this problem.

Another answer is that if D is frequently occuring as a bass note, then the key it's d natural minor.

Thanks. In that case it's in D minor.  So if I were to shift the bass note to F it would change the key. I'll try it.

Hi,

Another way of looking at it is that in simple harmonies the root chord is usually the one you start and end a piece of music. Obviously more complex pieces of music don't always follow that rule.

So if you start with an F major chord and end on an F major chord then the chances are you're probably in F major. Likewise if you start on a D minor chord and end on one then you're probably in D minor.

Don't' forget though.... rules are made to be broken!

Cheers,
Terry,
