Can anyone help me?  About thirty years ago I watched a television program (South Bank Show or similar) which did a review of Mike Oldfield's premiere of Tubular Bells live complete with friends and orchestra.  During the programme Steve Hillage played a wonderful little solo whilst sitting beside a classical bass player and the classical player was amazed.  So was I and I've been looking for it ever since.  Does anyone know what it was he played and is there a copy in existence.  Where could I get a copy, it would end a long long search.  :/

That sounds like it would be the premiere of The Orchestral Tubular Bells, in which Mike was replaced by Steve Hillage, after Mike pulled out claiming to be ill.

Unfortunately I can't help you find a recording of the performance. There are certainly MP3s of The Orchestral Hergest Ridge (also with Steve Hillage) around, and it would seem to follow that if recordings of that still survive then there'd be recordings of the Tubular Bells performance as well. I would imagine that the best you can hope for is an audio recording, though, but you never know...

Your show might be also :

June 25, 1973 ยจ Live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London: MIKE OLDFIELD, "TUBULAR BELLS" (BBC2 TV, Dec. 1, 1973): Tubular Bells (Oldfield)
The Band was :
Mike Oldfield: guitar, bass;
Mick Taylor, Steve Hillage, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey: guitar;
backed by HENRY COW, probably: Geoff Leigh or Karl Jenkins: horns;
Tim Hodgkinson or Mike Ratledge: keyboards;
John Greaves: bass;
Chris Cutler: drums.

I hope i didn't understand wrong, since it seems that I'm losing my poor English  :p

It was the mention of a classical bass player that made me think it would be the orchestral concert. There was a string section for the Queen Elizabeth Hall premiere concert as well, but no bass (just a standard string quartet of two violins, viola and cello).

You'll find better information about the Queen Elizabeth Hall concert at mikeoldfield.org. There are certainly bootleg audio recordings of the radio broadcast of that concert available.

(1000 posts...I didn't really even notice...I hope at least 500 of them contained something worth reading... ;))
