it's very strange that I haven't ever listened to ommadawn but now i want to hear it! Is there any other MO-album that has the same style as ommdawn? I just want to know the genre of ommadawn, rocky, peaceful, unpredictable or something else...

Please give me a hint before I will buy it!

Of course you should buy it. It's a masterpiece.  ;)

rocky? Hmm...not much anyway. But there's some big drama ending part one. (which seems like an obvious inspiration for "Far Above the Clouds" on Tubular Bells 3)

peaceful? Some parts. Part two maybe mostly peaceful and part 1 starts peacefully and very emotionally and then develops and goes trough all kinds of moods.

unpredictable? Most certainly.  :D
(But it's not as crazy as Amarok)

or something else? Lots of something else.

Well it's an instrumental piece of varying beautiful music in two parts. I personally like it quite a lot and if you like the long instrumentals then Ommadawn is for you.

Tell us what you think of it!!!
To me, of the old albums, I prefer Incantations and TBells, but this one is class too... it's the Amarok of the 70's hahaha

As I get older, the more "Ommadawn" seems like an excerpt from a longer work. It just seems too short, and in a hurry.

YES most definitely, you just HAVE to HAVE Ommadawn  :D no Mike Oldfield collection is complete without Ommadawn.
It's my favourite Mike album,no my favourite album of all time   :D .
It's groundbreaking in that it's perhaps the first album to mix what's now called  "World Music" with rock and Celtic music.
George Harrison introduced Indian music into The Beatles, and Brian Jones played sitar on Paint it Black, and Led Zeppelin's Kashmir has Arabic musical influences.
In 1971 an album "Brian Jones Presents The Pipes of Pan at Joujouka" was released, a recording of The Master Musicians of Joujouka Brian made on a trip to Morrocco in 1967. I guess the PofP was the first album of world music to be released, in the west. As this LP is very rare I've never heard it,sounds interesting.  Ommadawn I  would consider the first album to combine various forms of  world music throughout, rather than say just introducing it for one song.

When you do hear Ommadawn youll, most likely laugh, cry, smile, what I'm saying is Ommadawn is a fantastic ride of emotions,I guess your reaction depends upon how you're feeling when you play it , however Ommadawn makes me feel there's always the childlike innocence of On Horseback,to bring  a happy ending
:D .

Formore on world music, including the Master Musicians of Joujouka see here, unfortunately no mentionof Ommadawn is
made here  :/ www.wikipedia.org/wiki/world_music

I've got it now! And I think it's just great! I need to listen to it some more before I can say if it is one of the greatest MO's ever. The only thing I don't like with it is the length. It's to short!!  :p

rocky? Hmm...not much anyway.

Maybe not, but check out some live versions of Ommadawn part 1 from the early 80s, for instance the one from the 10th anniversary concert. These are a bit rocky ;)

cheers

Ommadawn was voted as being the best MO Album on a Poll thread some time ago...like when i first joined. That's just how good it is.

It's very surprising it didn't manage to top the Album charts when it was released. It only reached Number 4, which is still respectable. I listen to it a lot. I've got it on my MP3, permanently stationed, and it shall not be moved.

It's his best ever album.  If you like TB or Incantations or Amarok, you'll love it, but it's pointless using comparisons, because it's the best of the lot really.

I suggest you speak to Jonnyw about RSI. I have a feeling he knows a lot from his research....
