Hi all. I'd like to ask you two questions about the supposed splitting of Amarok in two halves.

Question 1: We all know wink that Mike meant Amarok to be one (almost) unbroken hour of music. But when it was first released, LPs and cassettes were as popular as CDs [I don't know if they still are now.... smile], so it HAD to be split between Side 1 and Side 2 for those releases. The Amarok M.L. FAQ say that the break is after the Mandolin section... before the Intermission. That would make Side 2 four minutes longer than Side 1... confused. If anyone out there has the vinyl or cassette release of Amarok, can he please tell me if the break is really there? [I think Orion69 can answer this...he knows why. wink]

Question 2: According to you, where should the break really be placed? IMHO the most sensible point to split Amarok in two is at 29'28'', right after Boat and right before Intro Reprise II. wink Please tell me what do you think about this.

Hi all

biggrin
But As we all know, endings are just beginings
wink

Amarok Player Tracklist says :
(...)
01:26:18:60 Boat
01:27:13:50 \___ Theme
01:28:08:50 \___ Bridge
01:28:30:65 \___ Climax
01:29:06:60 \___ Tremolo
01:29:27:00 Intro Reprise II
01:30:00:00 \___ [this is where side 2 starts on the LP]
01:31:51:40 \___ Vox Organ
01:32:06:00 Big Roses
(...)

I think this is a good cut. I made a private K7, and I cut it exactly there... and it works fine.
Cheers GMOVJ

Answering Question2: Last year I planned to make some Amarok MIDIs. First, I had to divide Amarok into parts and tracks. This was my result:

PART ONE
00:00:00 Track 1: Happy?
06:22:10 Track 2: Busy
15:56:25 Track 3
PART TWO
26:07:00 Tracks 4 to ?

You see, PART TWO in my count starts where the section list is being read aloud. I think this is (musically) the best cut.

BTW: Shortly after I'd completed 'Happy?' and 'Busy', Daniel Acedo came up with 'Flamenco, Folk & Relax', which is EXACTLY what I called 'Track 3'. But we had never talked before! Funny, eh?

PS :

Reading the FAQ (3.7 Is there a track-listing for Amarok?), I just found this :

25:06 Mandolin
[this is where the side breaks on the LP]
26:07 Intermission

GMOVJ, that's exactly the point I wanted to raise... smile The break in the Amarok M.L. FAQ seems to me a little senseless, in that it would make Side 2 longer than Side 1. Also [forgive me if I tell you this wink], the break in the Amarok Player tracklist (1:30:00:00) falls right in the middle of a So-Far-So, i.e. a little after the foot-stomping-with-choir Sondela section has begun. I still think that Side 1 should be stopped before that section starts, i.e. at 29'30''. smile

I too add a PS, also aimed at GMOVJ... wink

How do you know that K7 means a cassette tape? AFAIK that shortening only makes sense in Italian... smile

I do have the Amarok K7's version wink (it perfectly makes sense in french too) and the so-fa-so-fa section is splitted in the middle for some kind of transition between each sides.

Hi Ugo,
that depends if you prefear 'fade out-cut-fade' in or 'music-stop-music'...
I like it both, but after 2 tries, i choose to make my personnal K7 using the fade out - cut and reverse - fade in...
Yes side 2 is longer than side 2... But I think this is not very important that 2 side are stricly equal and it was harder to cut precisely when a section stop or start... so I chose the most lazy solution biggrin

K7 : well, I thought this was an internationnal short-cut... But saying this i remark that it will be spell 'kayseven' in english, wich mean nothing...

In french, K7 has exactly the same pronounciation than cassette, a perfect acronym :

'=' mean same pronounciation
K = ka = ca
7 = sept = sette

Regards GMOVJ
Private PS : hey Vinz, you should be on holidays, not posting things here !!! Go back to the beach !!! wink

Hello.....everyone.

Just a belated answer to Ugo. Same thing already said by Vinz, the K7 version is broken in the middle, immediately after the "Intro Reprise 2" starting. Maybe ending the side 1 with "Boat" and starting side two with "Intro Reprise 2" could be better, without fade.......noooooo!....a real Amarok interruptus......Aaaaaargh!!!!. wink

Off topic:
Ugo...... what do you think about KN8?.....enough different than K7. biggrin

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

Orion alias Mauro, wink Of course a KN8 is different from a K7...but I'm SURE no-one outside of Italy will get this joke...!!! smile

P.S. Why my supposed 29'30'' break is so horrifying to you??? smile smile

Hi all.

Ugo, I'm not horrified about your thought.(ok!....just a bit). It was a joky comment. biggrin
However if Amarok was broken at 29:30, it could suggest the intention to make a real cut between two parts. Instead, the fade-out in that point it's a clear sort of "to be continued".
I had made also some cuts to Amarok, for listen facility in mp3 format......highly personal. smile All above IMHO...... of course. smile
...the KN8 thing it's fully off topic.... or maybe is an off-shore topic.
Quite difficult to explain it outside of Italy.
K = Ca
N = n .... smile
8 = otto
all together "canotto" = "rowboat" .......next step "The Flamed Orion"... coming soon. biggrin

Personally not owning A, on LP CD or K7 I would have no idea, but three different things on left right and centre makes a good introduction - so what if the halves are different lengths? Makes for less spooling on one side of the tape. (More awkward to copy though since with old tapes you have to wipe them to the end).

The LP I have (probably all the others too) breaks exactly at the moment when the original CD is in 29:59 and remastered 30:00, just before the guitar starts. Both sides are the same length.
I think the 29:27 version with starting so-far-so would be better.. but maybe that wouldn't be technically possible anymore, i'm not sure.

I know this would never happen, and it would seriously unbalance the sides, but the perfect place for a side break for Amarok would be at the beginning of the Africa sections. Having side one fade out with the guitar, and side two beginning with the drums, it would be perfect. Of cousre, that would make side one four times longer than side two, and i know it wouldn't work. But they do sound like totally seperate tracks!

Wow - so they just cut it in half on the LP?  I had been wondering about this too.

Ancient thread but it's got my interest.Back in the old days (oh Dan's talking about the cassette again-hey i miss em ok? :laugh: )i taped Amarok and split it just before the bowed acoustic and Piano part.Now as i've always forgotten the part names is this not the right place?Made perfect sense at the time.More than simply chopping it in half anyway. :)

The neat thing that I noticed is that the very first high-pitched guitar melody on the "footsteps" section marks EXACTLY the 30 minute mark, so using that moment as a breakpoint makes some sort of sense.
