I wonder if there are any HIGHLY similar musicians to Mike. Not music INSPIRED by his albums or cover versions. And I don't consider J.M.Jarre or Vangelis similar to him. Maybe Cristopher Franke?
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not bored of Mike's albums, I'm just curious if Mike is totally UNIQUE or not...

Well, I found once a german artist who is very close de Mike's music. This is Harmut Zinn and his album is called 'Heiles Land'...
You can find the same atmosphere as in Incantations I think, and you can wonder if, in a certain way, Harmut didn't copy Mike...
You can find more information on http://www.ommdawn.cup.com/disco/etc/heles.html if you're speaking japanese wink

What we only can do for that is collect a few artists and everyone has to find out for himself who resembles Mike's music.
Well, I think Ennio Morricone does not belong to this...e.g.

Well I can't even help you, I believe Mike's instrumentals and his overall "sound" are "very" unique at all. smile

Hello, friends.

In my post "New Age artist" I pointed some groups and soloists that are SERIOUSLY resembling in style, sound or mood to Miké music. Also in my unfortunate post "One", related to Tino Izzo, a wonderful guitarist from Italy, I indicate how similar he is to Mike without copies or direct influences.

Those are the best examples that I can show, according with my humble musical culture.

Greetings

Delfín

Medwyn Goodall is the closest in style to MO.

JMJ and VP not similar? How *dare* you!

I suppose Chris Franke, Edgar Froese and the rest of TD over the years could be a missing link between Mike's instrumental work and the synth stuff of JMJ/VP - I suppose we could form a chain-type thing:

Mike Oldfield - Tangerine Dream - Vangelis - Jean-Michel Jarre - Kraftwerk?

Hmm...

* ChiRho stops to think
* ChiRho then realises that this can be harmful to his health, and stops immediately

I like your assessment of Tangerine Dream as a link in the chain - certainly they could be regarded as an influence although I've never seen that documented. What I have seen are the minimilist composers of the 20th Century such as Phillip Glass, Terry Riley and Steve Reich quoted as influences.

Tangerine Dream are often misunderstood as purely a synth group - during their years with Virgin, synths were most prominent in their music. But they started off as a more convential set up (in terms of instruments) and merely experimented, expanding the boundaries of music on Alpha Centauri, Atem and Zeit. I guess this could be the subject of a whole new discussion.

Since I posted Medwyn Goodall as the artist most similar to Mike, I would have to add Stephen Caudell as equally similar. Anyone that has heard 'Wine Dark Sea' would surely agree - the guitar work and structure of this album is simply awesome and highly recommended! cool

Cheers,

T4

I'm quite proud of that. People saying that Vangelis/JMJ aren't strictly related to MO, so I provide a link

MO - originally folk-inspired instrumentals
TD - rock-like instrumentals, but experimented with synths
VP - did almost everything himself, lot bits of experimentation, "techno-jazz" (Main Sequence being a good example)
JMJ - almost qualifies as a total-solo artist, but occasionally got help from the likes of Michel Geiss - often built own instruments, or had built for him
KW - possibly the purest form of electronica out there, often constructed their own devices (most notably the modified calculators), once even let a computer improvise the original track for one of their albums (edited it after lunch!)

Anyone have any suggestions for either end of the chain? Insertions? Or even side-branches?

Yes, I think perhaps Kitaro and Isao Tomita could also appear in there somewhere.

There is of course, a whole host of more 'obscure' instrumental and electronic artists who could be included, who deserve far more recognition than they get and have at some time been influenced by or perhaps even influenced the greats you noted (associated groups in brackets), e.g. Mark Shreeve (Redshift), Stephen Caudel, John Dyson (Wavestar), Paul Ward (Quiet Point), Andy Pickford, Bekki Williams, David Wright (Code Indigo), Robert Fox (Code Indigo), Arcane, Karl Jenkins/Adiemus, etc.....

Cheers,

Two more artists worth a listen are Bjorn Lynne and Mike Andrews. Both write instrumental/electronic/New age/prog music, full of strong melody and diverse textures.

Go to www.ampcast.com where there are loads of free mp3 files available for download, if you want to check them out.

('Joolie's Song' by Bjorn Lynne is fabulous - you'll know what I mean when you hear it!)
