IMHO that arpeggio isn't even original to Mike. It has its roots in folk music. I've heard it used before Mike by Ritchie Blackmore in his folk-inspired Blackmore's Night band, and if I recall correctly even someone like Jimmy Page made good use of something like that ("Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You"). James Hetfield didn't need to listen to Enigmatism to get that, it's probably a reminiscence from his childhood - from some folk piece he used to play on an acoustic guitar.
