According to the well-known theory of the six degrees of separation, everyone on Earth is six steps away from everyone else. This gave me an idea for a game: find a link between Mike Oldfield and the following people by inserting no more than six elements in the 'chain'. The starting element may be the title of a piece of music by Mike O., the title of one of his songs, a song lyric, the name of a person connected to him, etc. etc. - whatever may be even remotely connected to Mike O. :) Here there are no "right" or "wrong" answers, whoever provides a believable and consistent 'linking chain' does the right thing. :) So, let your phantasy flow free and tell me what is the link between Mike Oldfield and...

... Elvis Presley.

... Bob Dylan.

... Bruce Springsteen.

... Elton John.

... Dick Van Dyke.

... Paul McCartney. [This is hard if you don't live in the UK. :D]

... Yusuf p.k.a. Cat Stevens. [This is easy.]

... me. :D

Of course you are free to list more people, and their link(s) with Mike O. :)

Dick Van Dyke
"Tales from the Dam" (appears in the Fan Music section here)
Mike Oldfield.

I suspect this may be too free associational though for what you have in mind, Ugo?

Okay,let's work...

Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run...sung by John Miles at Nokia Night of the Proms 2006,who also sang lead vocals on MO's Shadow on the Wall.

For all living in the UK:

Matthew Wright (of The Wright Stuff) > Caroline Monk (Mike's former PA,MW's former girlfriend)> MO

Other:

Stephen Fry (QI's presenter) > Molly Oldfield(one of the QIelves) > MO

Well, that's me out of the game! I don't know any of that music industry stuff.

@ Tati: that's not what I had in mind for Springsteen, but it's very good. However, I asked what links M.O. with Springsteen, not the opposite. :)

@ nightspore: knowledge of the music industry isn't required here, just knowledge of Mike Oldfield. :D Your Dyke-Dam association is indeed too vague; the one I have in mind is much more precise and it's very closely linked to Mike Oldfield, but if you never saw a certain film you'll never get it. :)

The only Van Dyke film I've seen was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and the only Mike connection I can think of with regard to that is that a lot of Mike's music is "truly scrumptious"

@ nightspore: thanks a lot for the song, it's very nice. (I have the film on DVD, your link above is a good excuse for me not to pull it off the shelf. :D) Anyway, that was not the film I was thinking of. And anyway, I see that this game is generating no interest at all in the Oldfield fan community, which seems to be far busier discussing about a release which has not yet been released. :D This is why, if I get no answers within a week, I shall close the game and reveal all the links. And I shan't do any more games in here, because I have the vague feeling that this is not a place for gaming.

Six Degrees Elvis Presley > Mike Oldfield

Elvis Presley had a hit called 'Suspicious Minds', which was covered by...

(1st Degree) The Fine Young Cannibals, whose lead singer Roland Gift once acted in the TV series 'Highlander'...

(2nd Degree) ...the theme tune of which was performed by Queen, whose members once included...

(3rd Degree) Paul Rodgers, who contributed to the album 'Candyman', which was credited to...

(4th Degree) Steve Lukather, who was in the 80s rock band Toto alongside...

(5th Degree) Simon Phillips, who produced the albums 'Discovery' and 'The Killing Fields' for...

(6th Degree) Mike Oldfield!

Yes, I'm hijacking this thread!

1) Sir Paul McCartney has a minor planet named after him: 4148 McCartney.

2) Erm, which is a pretty similar scenario to asteroid 5656 Oldfield, which was named after Mike Oldfield

@ Starfish: the links you have are all very good except Paul McCartney, which was a bit vague. But the links I have are much simpler, and more direct. And none of them involves six degrees. I shall list them all here.

Elvis Presley
1. Elvis was the first artist to cover "Your Loving Arms" by Tom Jans.
2. In the Eighties that song was covered by Anita Hegerland, who...
3. ...of course sang on various songs by Mike Oldfield.

Bob Dylan
1. Dylan has a song called "All Along the Watchtower".
2. Mike Oldfield, in "Crises", sang about the watcher and the tower". :D

Bruce Springsteen
1. The Boss had a hit with "Chimes of Freedom", which was...
2. ...written by Bob Dylan, so this also works for him. :)
3. Chimes, or orchestral chimes, is the actual name of the instrument commonly known as tubular bells.
4. Tubular bells were often played by Mike Oldfield.

Elton John
1. Elton's album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was engineered by David Hentschel, who...
2. ...co-produced the album QE2, by Mike Oldfield. Hentschel also played synths on both albums (Elton's and Mike's).

Dick Van Dyke
1. At one point in the animated sequence in Disney's Mary Poppins, during a funny fox-hunt scene, Dick grabs a fox by his tail, saving him from a group of pursuing dogs and placing him on top of his (Dick's) wooden horse, which broke free from a carousel shortly before.
2. Once he's on the horse, the fox shouts out at his pursuers: "Come on and fight, you dirty ommadawns!" [Check out the scene on YouTube, at the bottom of this post, if you don't believe me. :D] By the way, Dick also did the voice of the fox.
3. Ommadawn is, of course, the title of an album by Mike Oldfield.

Paul McCartney
1. Macca got very irritated when his album Memory Almost Full was given for free by The Mail on Sunday without asking permission from him. They did ask Macca's record label, though. :)
2. Mike Oldfield did exactly the same when exactly the same thing happened with his Tubular Bells album.

Yusuf p.k.a. Cat Stevens
1. When he was still known as such, Cat wrote a song called "Moonshadow".
2. Mike Oldfield wrote a completely unrelated song called "Moonlight Shadow".

Me - There are two links here, the simplest is only one step.

Link 1
1. I did remixes of Mike Oldfield's "Angélique" and "Quicksilver".

Link 2
1. I translated into Italian Daniel King's book, Memento Mori, which is a collection of short stories.
2. ABBA are mentioned in one of the stories.
3. Mike Oldfield covered "Arrival", originally by ABBA. :D

Ah, I forgot: here's the fox hunt scene from Disney's Mary Poppins.

I would never have got any of those, with the exceptions of Cat Stevens and Memento Mori...  :)

I think the original rules for "6 Degrees" (which mostly centered on actor Kevin Bacon) meant the degrees were either related by blood or marriage, or worked/appeared with.

I don't think covering a song should count really - it opens up far to many vague links.

So, for instance, Mike is 2 degrees seperated from Kevin Bacon (but I cheated using this website )

The answer is 42 - but what is the question?

But from me to Mike?

1) As a kid I appeared on a Radio 1 show with Paddy Kingsland - who then worked at BBC Radiophonic Workshop..
2) Paddy wrote the theme and music for BBCTV series "Around the World in 80 Days - starring Michael Palin
3) Michael Palin was in Monty Python with John Cleese...
4) John Cleese was Master of Ceremonies on Tubular Bells 2...
5) Tubular Bells 2 was composed by....MIKE OLDFIELD !!

@ Milamber: No, I wouldn't even dare touching such a great title as "Datura Highway". And anyway I'm not translating that one, it'd take too long. :)

@ Andy: I never saw the Kevin Bacon film which popularized the theory. My game was only slightly based on the theory itself, i.e. it consisted in finding links between apparently unlinked people. But from your point of view I must admit that you are right: the only valid link should be between Mike and Elton John, both of which worked with David Hentschel. But I also think that The Mail on Sunday linking Mike and Macca because of the albums they gave away for free was quite good. :D

@ nightspore: if you knew the Cat Stevens and Memento Mori links, why didn't you post them? Were you waiting for me to get cross? :D Or did the Van Dyke thing go over your head?

By the way, can anyone find me a link between Mike Oldfield and Joe Goddard? This is perfect according to the Andy Carlo / Kevin Bacon version of the 6 Degrees theory, as it involves a close relation of Mike's. :D

# Ugo, I'm glad you like the title "Datura Highway". Oddly, it has the same syllabic pattern as "Memento Mori". I appear to like 5 syllable titles that contain two iambs ("I am" s or maybe iambs to the slaughter  )

With regard to Moonlight Shadow and Cat Stevens, the only reason I didn't post anything is that there's a whole thread devoted to that topic, and you and I have exchanged views with regard to it it before. So I thought there might be some other link you were talking about. So I hope you're not cross!  :D

# Cam, Townsville is one of my favourite places, but fortunately I've never needed to seek medical help there!
