Forgive me if this joke may sound a little blasphemous, and please don't axe this topic - it's just a joke, it's not intended as offensive towards anyone. :)

A man wants to buy a present for his uncle, who's a bishop. He goes to a religious items shop and asks the owner: "I need a present for my bishop uncle, but I don't know where to start from..."
"Well, you've come to the right place. Have you already seen something that may interest you?"
"Yes. How much is that Batman cape?"
"What Batman cape?!? That one is a cardinal's frock from the 1600s, and however it's 550 euros."
"No, that's beyond me. What about that purple scarf?"
"How dare you! What purple scarf?!? That one is a Lent stole, and however it's 400 euros".
"Aw, that's too much. How much is that wooden 'plus' over there"
"For heaven's sake! You're a blasphemous man! What you are calling a 'plus' is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, and it's 175 euros."
"Ah. ...And without that acrobat on it?"

Hey, Ugo,

I hope we're not pushing our luck, considering Inkanta, with your thread about bishops and mine about nuns  ;)

Oh heck...I don't know....as I said in another thread, 'suppose we have to have some off-topicness.

Now that you have me thinking about it, by the minute I am becoming as uncomfortable with jokes about religion. Some people take it pretty seriously, and even if it's not meant to be offensive, it ends up that way.

We'll see how it goes.

When I come back from my road trip, the admins will have a parlee about this stuff. I'm also thinking that these threads, if they belong any place at all, belong under some other forum--maybe yet to be designed--but not in the general discussion about Mike Oldfield. Harrr.

Peace,

Inkanta, who can take the phun out of anything :/

heh! :)

I do understand where you're coming from, Inkanta.  Religion starts wars.  But I like Ugo's joke.

Yeah, I know what you mean Inkanta...

Just a little 'off topic-section' would be cool though  :p

I thought that was that purpose of the General Discussion forum!

But the thing is this was always a general discussion forum about Mike, the law was fairly rigourously enforced in the past and it worked well. I'm all for jokes about nuns/bishops/popes but I'd rather there was a general discussion forum devoted to entirely to general discussion, including nuns, outwith everything MO related. It just becomes messy and difficult to follow if you have to wade through posts about everything under the sun if all you want to do his read some interesting MO related stuff, which lets face it is the only reason we're all here. We need a bit of order here methinks.

I agree, Toby, and that's what I was thinking. Not sure we can do much for a couple of weeks, though. I'll be on the road this next week, probably with limited Internet connectivity, and when I am back life will be hectic. But..then it all calms down for me--but not necessarily for anyone else--we'll see what we can do. It may be that the preference is to do major changes when the software upgrade occurs later this year.

BTW, unlike some forums where you get some people averaging 69 posts per day <gasp! Where is the time in a 24-hour day to do that??> and members are rewarded for high volumes of posts in that they get bumped up to various levels (even if their all their posts contain nothing but a smilie), that's never been the purpose here.

Check out the guidelines--even the GD was supposed to somehow connect to Mike, though if you perform a search, you can find old threads of total off-topicness.  ATM, I'd be for a General-General Discussion. It does build community and gives people something to do between masterpieces. It could be pruned, keeping only the current year or two. Maybe we should do like some Boards out there, and name all of the forums something associated with the titles of MO pieces. For example, "Rumours" could become "Source of Secrets" or some such thing (and the forum description would further clarify what we meant by the title). I dunno. Only time will tell....

Religion starts wars.

I would say it's more basic than that. As it says in the Bible:
"Where do the wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?" James 4:1. Yes, religion is one cloak for such warring desires but there are many more (political ideals and so forth) that all come from the same root.

Concerning religious jokes on this forum, I really don't mind as long as they are kept under the general thread and kept together rather than spread all over the place. I work in a protestant church and do not get offended by such jokes. Jesus is an acrobat - with His words (and a mighty fine one too)
