... and I was browsing through the several LP's, and after going through a lot of crap, I got a shock as I found that green cover... Crises!! I looked fondly at that black disc for some time, but got saddened by the fact that there was no other Mike album nearby... until I found it. Yes, I found it. Tubular Bells. Complete with "flaming bones" back cover and "old tin boxes" warning. I wanted to take it home so badly, just for the sheer pleasure for owning the '73 vinyl and put it ahead of my (modest) LP collection... but I wanted to spend my money on stuff I don't have, so I got Led Zeppelin II, The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, Fear Of Music, Nursery Cryme and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Also, a CD by a band called Midnight Sun, that sounds truly cool.

But... ahh, that Tubular Bell vinyl... oh, and 10 minutes later I found Tubular Bells II on another store. *shudder*

Owning TB on vinyl should be mandatory by law for any MO fan. TB looses about 25% of its atmosphere when you take away the 'crack' and 'pop' of a needle on vinyl (as for TB2003, don't make me laugh) I've always wanted to own TBII on vinyl even though I'm the worlds biggest fan of that album, I bet it sounds pretty lush coming off a turntable.

TB for me is even better on the Boxed version on...LP.

I gotta add that the vinyl boxed hergest ridge is just fantastic. When we used to buy vinyl, that "pop" as you put the needle down for the first time on a new record was so exciting. But that's us old codgers for you.
But the down side was you had to get up after 18 minutes to change sides, breaking the atmosphere, so cd's probably win.
And now I'm slowly buying the older stuff on cd, at least i can make cd compilations on my pc

Hey, I actually enjoy flipping the side of the LP. Fear Of Music, for example, has a great side A closer ("Memories Can't Wait"), and it actually feels like two separate albums in one disc. But that's just me. :) I wouldn't be able to say as far as "one song" albums are concerned, but I think it adds to the experience. ;)

I've never really shared the view that vinyl is better than CD. OK, so the sound quality may be better than CD, but I can't really tell because the record player won't work on our surround sound system. Surely then quality improvement is negated by the old speakers that the turntable is connected to. Plus, I'm one for convenience. I'm having trouble imagining that getting up to change sides adds anything to the experience (it certainly ruins the mood for me). You can't take a record into the car and listen to it. You can't rip a record to your hard drive so you can burn compilation CDs from it (OK, you can, but I can't be bothered getting a pre-amp). Plus, the clicks and pops you talk about just annoy me. I listen to an album for the music, not for clicks and pops, which are doubly annoying for me because the old speakers on my CD player in my room click and pop (when they work).

But I'm not a total record hater. I do have TB, Five Miles Out and Crises on record, as well as a copy of Boxed that I certainly wasn't expecting to find. I've been half considering framing my copy of Crises and mounting it on the wall, because this is my favourite of all album covers, and the best thing about records is the large covers.

Yup. We can't forget about the large covers. And the gatefolds! THE GATEFOLDS!!

I'm not trying to sound picky here, making all those constant replies. I definitely won't disagree with you that CDs sound better than vinyl discs. Actually, I never said the quality of the LP's are better. They're worse! From a practical point of view, CDs are endlessly better, obviously. They're digital, the quality is superior, they're more convenient, they're... well, compact discs... And sincerely, I wouldn't be masochistic to the point of replacing all my CDs to LP's, really. The reasons why I like vinyl are basically:

1- Vinyl discs are... well, a physical thing. With CD's, it's very abstract: you put it on the player and... whatever. Vinyl is more physical, concrete: you see the music, you feel the music. It is there, you can see what's going on.
2- The clicks and pops and lo-fi can add to the experience, in some cases. I'll agree that there are albums that benefit from super-hi-fi quality, but some albums get a much more haunting atmosphere from the sound of the turntable. I have albums like that, and I can say that proudly.
3- You can pump up the speed to 45 RPM and laugh. :D

[Off-topic reply]

U can also do this on a CD, Mustapha. There is a Pioneer unit around (which I own, and use when DJing), which allows you to do to a CD whatever you do to a LP - block it with your fingers, do some scratching, spin it backwards, speed it down, and of course speed it up to the equivalent of a LP being played at 45 RPM. :) Moreover, one of the latest plug-ins for this toy also allows you to add simulated pops and clicks to a CD recording. So there you go. :D

P.S. Sorry, but I hate old vinyls poppin' and clickin'. As soon as I get my hands on a (however badly mastered) CD version of something I have only on a scratched old LP, I get it. :)

Why? If it's clean, free of dust, and not scratched or bent out of shape, and you've got a quality turntable, then there's no way you can say the vinyl sounds inferior to the CD. I like both formats, they both have their advantages.

Yeah, sure, but try to convince the young generation and the technicians at Sony and Philips and that. ;)

It would be fun if the artists going on today started issuing their new albums in LP format. Rush did release copies of Vapor Trails in vinyl. That was nice. LP is not "obsolete technology", as everyone thinks.

Why didn't you buy the Tubular Bells vinyl, Mustapha? It isn't that expensive, is it? ;) I've got about 6 copies of them, '73 originals or later editions (Boxed etc.)... which you can find here for around 8 or 10 euros.

IMNSHO, LPs can be better than CDs in some instances. They have a softer sound to them. I can't really describe it. But I like it for some songs. Erik Satie's Gnossienne 5 is one that I HAVE to find on an LP. Dunno if anyone puts furniture music on LPs, but I must find it :p I've never listened to Mike Oldfield on an LP. Mostly because I'm a new fan. I've only listened to Tubular Bells I, II, and III, and Crises. But generally I prefer CDs to records. I am curious to hear them on LP, though. I don't have a record player (that works ;)) and I'd like to get one.

I can only imagine Tubular Bells might be one of the most darned cool albums to own on vinyl, just like almost all Mike's 70's releases. But stuff like Crises, Amarok, Heaven's Open, etc. benefit from the CD quality because of that certain fading-into-the-distance feel on the music - if you understand me. But I'm just guessing, I don't own any Mike LP. :-(

BTW, I didn't buy the LP because... well, I was planning to buy albums that I didn't own yet... though I think it would be better if I had bought TB instead of Led Zeppelin II... :/ Still, I just realised I can't live without Fear Of Music and Nursery Cryme. :D
