Please can anyone tell me what the early Soft Machine albums are like? I like Kevin's stuff, so are the SM albums with Kev similar or different to Kev's solo albums? If they are similar, then I suppose I'd like them! I only know the tracks 'Joy Of A Toy' via 'Joy Of A Toy continued' and 'Why Are We Sleeping'!

I'm not well acquainted with either the Soft Machine and Kevin Ayers' solo output, but I suppose they are very different. The Soft Machine is a very avantgarde band, and their first album (the only one with Ayers, if I'm not mistaken) seems to be their most "conventional". The rest is avantgarde to the top.

The first two Soft Machine albums are way less avantgarde than what they did from Third onwards. I can't say for sure if they are similar to Kevin's stuff since it's quite a long time since I last heard them, and I don't have them here right now. From what I remember though, I'd say they are at least a bit similar.
