Hi there ,

I recently diccovered some rare vids of Kevin Ayers & The Whole World on YouTube ( with a young Mike on bass), this led me on to  looking for some Soft Machine, found some vids from 1967.

I did have a neighbour Bob had many Canterbury bands in his record collection, unfortunately Bob had MS and died aged 44 due to some complications.  I know he had some bands Kevin Ayers, "Caravan" ,"Gong" ,"Hatfield and The North", Soft Machine I didn't really get to play through them all, and maybe I needed to  give the LP's a few spins to really get into them .
I  really got into KA&TWW about a year or so ago,I think it took a few listens to really get into,I'd like to check out some more Canterbury Scene bands.
I did see some of a Robert Wyatt documentary on BBC2 about 2 years ago, but I did find much of his music  a bit "avant garde" .
Any reccomendations please.

:)  :D

BTW I did see aCD of Robert Wyatt and Friends ,in the HMV Shop, I think it was a live concert , I know Mike plays guitar  on some tracks .   Can't remember much else about it except all the musicians were pictured whizzing around in wheelchairs on the back cover. I haven't got round to buying this as I do think someof RW's music is a bit too experimental for my ears.

The Canterbury scene was the greatest. So many good bands albums.

"In the land of grey and pink" - Caravan (great pop/rock with a rural peacful vibe)

"Fourth/Fifth" - Soft Machine (not for jazz-haters though)

"Rock Bottom" - Robert Wyatt (side 1 is flawless! Some of the greatest songs ever written)

"Rotter's Club" - Hatfield and the North (like Caravan, only better)

"You" - Gong (this record has Pierre Moerelen on drums. It's not worlds apart from Mike ca FMO)

I have yet to explore bands such as Egg and National Health, but why hurry?

Caravan's 'Nine Feet Underground' opened my eyes to the whole scene when I was 14. Since then, I've explored all the aforementioned bands, plus others like Matching Mole.

A great scene and in my opinion, totally unique and typically British!
